AMES, Iowa - Jake Sullivan scored 25 points and Adam Haluska hit two critical free throws with 18 seconds left as Iowa State came from 16 down in the second half to beat Kansas State 64-61 Saturday.
Tim Barnes hit five 3-pointers and added a season-high 23 points for Iowa State (13-10, 3-9 Big 12), which broke a four-game losing streak and sent Kansas State to its 14th straight conference road loss.
Kansas State (12-13, 3-9) seemed to be headed for its first Big 12 road win since March of 2001 when it opened a 37-21 lead early in the second half. But Barnes hit three 3-pointers in a 15-0 run that got Iowa State back in it, and the Cyclones rallied again after trailing 53-48 with 5:58 to play.
Haluska, who had missed his first eight shots, scored on a baseline drive to put Iowa State ahead to stay at 60-59. Barnes then stole the ball and made a layup for a 62-59 lead.
Pervis Pasco, who led Kansas State with 15 points and 10 rebounds, dunked to cut the lead to 62-61 with 1:47 left, but he missed a short jumper the next time the Wildcats had the ball.
Barnes missed a jumper, but Kansas State fumbled the ball out of bounds in the scramble for the long rebound, returning possession to Iowa State. Gilson DeJesus then fouled Haluska and the freshman swished both free throws to make it 64-61.
DeJesus had to force up a long 3-point try with time running out and the buzzer sounded before anyone could control the rebound.
Iowa State played without top reserve Marcus Jefferson, who returned to his home in East Chicago, Ind., to be with his ailing mother. Barnes, Sullivan and Haluska played all 40 minutes and Iowa State coach Larry Eustachy used only one substitute, Clint Varley.
Jackson Vroman had 16 rebounds and nine points for Iowa State. Jarrret Hart scored 12 for Kansas State and Matt Siebrandt 10.
Kansas State ran off 10 straight points while holding Iowa State scoreless for more than six minutes in building a 21-10 lead. The Wildcats, who shot 54 percent in the first half, led 33-21 at halftime and went up by 16 on consecutive baskets by Siebrandt and Frank Richards.
