Volleyball Defeats Creighton, 3-1, in Season Opener

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team opened the 2003 season with a 3-1 victory against Creighton Friday night at Hilton Coliseum, in the first day of the 2003 Heritage Classic. Junior Brittany Dalager led the Cyclone charge, finishing with a team-high 19 kills. Senior Lindsey Chapman also played a major role in helping ISU open the season 1-0, as she collected 19 digs and 51 assists. Jaden Custer led Creighton with 11 kills and 16 digs. Tonight's contest was also the season opener for Creighton.
In game one, Iowa State got off to a fast start as they took an early lead. Dalager and senior Renae Pruess did most of the damage, finishing the opening set with 10 kills and five digs combined. Senior Dana Koziol and Chapman had five digs each to help lead the Cyclones. ISU pulled away later in the game to take game one, 30-23.
In the second game, it was tight the whole way as neither team could sustain a lead for very long as there were 17 tie scores and seven lead changes. Dalager had five kills and six digs to lead ISU, but Creighton went on to win the thriller, 32-30.
Games three and four were all Iowa State as the Cyclones won the third set, 30-26, before going on to win set four, 30-24. ISU had 69 kills on 185 attempts in the match to win the match, 3-1.
In the evening's earlier match, McNeese State swept Auburn, 3-0.
The Cyclones will take the floor for their second match of the Iowa State Heritage Classic, Saturday morning at 11 a.m., against McNeese State. Auburn will face off with Creighton at 9 a.m.
