AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team secured the Heritage Classic Tournament title with victories against McNeese State and Auburn on Saturday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. Renae Pruess, Brittany Dalager and Ashlie McWee tallied double-digit kills and dig totals to help ISU improve to 3-0 on the year. Senior Lindsey Chapman tallied 94 assists in the two games to help lead the Cyclones on offense. It is the second year in a row Iowa State has started the season, 3-0.
McNeese State was led by Marquita Williams, who tallied 14 kills and 17 digs. Auburn was led by Camila Lago, who had eight kills and five digs. The Cyclones' Dalager and Pruess were named to the all-tournament team, while McWee was named the tournament's MVP. They were joined on the all-tournament team by Maira Mogollon (Auburn), Nicole James (McNeese State) and Leah Ratzlaff and Janeen Piller (Creighton).
In the first match against McNeese State, Pruess had four kills and four digs and Dalager had three kills and six digs to lead Iowa State to a 30-21 win in game one. In game two, it was more Iowa State as Dalager and Pruess added four kills apiece to lead ISU to a 30-26 victory. In the third game, the Cyclones faltered a little bit as the Cowgirls came back on the strength of a .222 hitting percentage to steal game three, 30-25. The Cyclones were able to come out strong in game four, hitting a sizzling .350 from the floor, with Dalager hitting .600 with three digs to win, 30-17, and take the match, 3-1.
In Iowa State's later match against Auburn, the Cyclones claimed big leads in two of the three games as Dalager registered 12 kills and 12 digs for the match, while Pruess had 10 kills and seven digs.
In game one, ISU jumped ahead early and had 17 kills to the Tigers eight, while holding Auburn to -.030 hitting from the floor, to take the game, 30-24. The second game was more Iowa State as the Cyclones hit .268 from the floor with 16 kills and 19 digs to win the second game, 30-17. ISU closed out Auburn, and the tournament title in game three by hitting a hot .500 from the floor along with 17 kills to the Tigers eight, to win game three, 30-16, and sweep the match.
"I'm proud of the team," head coach Linda Crum said. "Our goal was to be 3-0 after this weekend and we are. So we accomplished that goal. Renae, Ashlie and Brittany were really the key to our wins this weekend. They were very solid and did all the things we asked of them and more. Our ball control was terrific and really helped us get our offense going. I just thought we played really well in this tournament."
Iowa State will play host ot its second tournament of the season when intrastate rival Iowa, Western Illinois and Kentucky come to Hilton Coliseum to take part in the 2003 Cyclone Challenge. The Cyclones will take on Iowa Friday night at 7 p.m. On Saturday, ISU will play Western Illinois at 11 a.m., and Kentucky at 4 p.m.
