AUSTIN, Texas - Brittany Dalager had a team-high 12 kills and Renae Pruess added seven, but it wasn't enough as Iowa State fell to Texas in three games in Wednesday night volleyball action. The match was played in Texas' Gregory Gymnasium. Pruess and fellow senior Dana Koziol were the defensive leaders for Iowa State with five digs. With the loss, Iowa State falls to 7-4 overall and 0-1 in Big 12 play. Mira Topic led the way for Texas with 13 kills and five digs.
Texas dominated the match offensively, hitting .272 from the floor and collecting 44 kills to Iowa State's 36. Texas also had the edge defensively, with 32 digs to Iowa State's 24.
Sophomore Amanda Craig had 20 assists and four digs, while sophomore Ashlie McWee added five kills.
Texas took a 5-3 lead in game one before ISU used a matching 5-3 run to tie the score at 8-8. Both teams traded the next several points before Texas' Topic scored eight-straight points on her serve to give the Longhorns a 20-11 lead. ISU pulled to within 22-15, but the Longhorns again used strong serving to close out the game, 30-17. ISU had 12 kills on 39 attacks in game one and hit just .026 from the floor. Dalager led the Cyclones with five kills.
The second game played much like the first one with both teams battling through a 9-9 score. ISU then went on a 5-1 run to take a 14-12 lead, before the Longhorns took a slight lead at 19-18. Texas again used strong serving and went on a 10-4 run to close out the second stanza, 30-22. ISU had 11 kills, while Texas had 14 kills and just five hitting errors. Pruess led the way for the Cyclones with three kills.
Iowa State took control in game three, jumping to a 15-12 lead. The Cyclones then extended their lead to 28-23 with match point looming. But Texas put together an 8-1 run and got strong serving to defeat the Cyclones, 31-29. Texas won the match, 3-0. ISU held Texas to .056 hitting from the floor, while hitting .081 and both teams had 13 kills. Pruess and Katie Kruenegel had two solo blocks each, while McWee and Craig each added a block assist.
"I thought we were very competitive in the match," head coach Linda Crum said. "I thought we served extremely well and our ball handling was good, but we just couldn't take advantage of the tie situations to pull ahead. We had some good plays and were very consistent at times, but we need to work on being consistent all of the time.
The Cyclones return to action Saturday, Sept. 20, when they face Baylor at Hilton Coliseum in a 7 p.m. contest.
