AMES, Iowa-- Amy Flores scored a goal early in the second half to break a scoreless tie and freshman Brittanie Waddell added her third goal of the season to help ISU defeat Missouri, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Missouri's Audrey J. Walton Complex. With the win, ISU improves to 6-7 overall and 3-2 in Big 12 play, while Missouri falls to 5-8-1 overall and 2-4-0 in league play. The win, which was ISU's first on the road this season, extends the Cyclones' winning streak to three games.
The first half was played to a standstill as neither team scored and both squads registered nine shots. But ISU had six corner kicks to Missouri's zero and six saves to the Tigers' three.
In the second half, the Cyclones took control. Flores nailed her fourth goal in the last three games at the 50th minute when she beat a defender for a straight shot to break the 0-0 tie.
"Amy Flores did a great job of being able to take care of the ball," head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "She did a good job of getting where she needs to in the box and she took a great shot and really came through for us."
Waddell put the icing on the game for ISU when she headed in the ball off a corner kick by freshman Renee de St. Aubin. The goal was scored in the 72nd minute.
Missouri had a 12-11 shot advantage in the second half and had six corner kicks to ISU's four. Overall, ISU had 20 shots and 10 corner kicks. Freshman Joanna Haig gave ISU it's fourth shut out of the season after having 13 saves on the afternoon.
"Joanna played outstanding," Horbacher said. "Our whole defense was outstanding."
Baumann led the way with four shot with two of them coming on goal. Flores, freshman Beth Passman and freshman Stephanie Kaphingst each had three shots, while Christine Beatty, de St. Aubin, Kate Kirwan, Meghan Schlenker, Erin Witte and Alli Coleman all added a shot.
"This was a good win for us," Hornbacher said. "It was an overall team effort. We had a lot of attacking opportunities and we had a lot of shots. The offense played well, the defense played well, everyone played well. The team did a great job of sticking to the game plan and they did a great job of creating and adjusting to Missouri. It was huge for us to get a road win. We haven't had one in awhile.. The team is getting stronger week by week. It's great to see us getting better."
With the victory Sunday, ISU surpassed its win total (5) from a year ago.
The Cyclones will play the second of four straight road contests next weekend when they take on Oklahoma on Friday night and Oklahoma State on Sunday afternoon.
