AMES, Iowa-- Amy Flores scored with under six minutes remaining in the second over time to lead Iowa State to a thrilling 2-1 double overtime win against Baylor on Friday night at the ISU Soccer Complex. At the end of regulation, the game was tied, 1-1. It was Iowa State's first double overtime game of the season and its fourth overtime game against Baylor. With the win, ISU improves to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 play. Baylor falls to 4-5-1 overall.
Iowa State outshot Baylor 6-4 in a scoreless first half, with ISU goalkeeper Joanna Haig collected one save. The Bears struck early in the second half when Kandyce Farr found Tiffany Boshers just off a corner kick for her fourth goal of the season. It was the first goal ISU had allowed in the second half in four games.
Down a goal, Iowa State continued to attack, looking for the tie. It came in the 78th minute when Kate Kirwan and Beth Passman found Erin Witte, who headed in the shot for her third goal of the season. The Cyclones came from behind to force overtime against Baylor for the fourth-straight game.
In the first overtime, Iowa State took one shot to Baylor's zero. In the second overtime, each team registered a shot on goal, but it was Iowa State who made the most of their shot on goal. Flores took the pass from senior Kelley Burke and freshman Stephanie Kaphingst and nailed the goal from the right side of the net.
"I think Amy Flores showed a lot of heart tonight," said head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. "She knew where she needed to be and got a great service. Overall, it was a whole team effort. The girls played outstanding. I'm so proud of them right now."
Baylor finished with a 17-16 edge in shots. Junior Kristina Baumann, freshman Renee de St. Aubin and Kaphingst led the Cyclones with three shots each, while Witte added two shots. Five other Cyclones contributed a shot on the night.
"I'm so excited for the team," Hornbacher said. "They showed a lot of heart, a lot of passion and I knew going into overtime that they would leave it all on the field. It took that extra desire to get back in the game, the extra desire to tackle and defend. This is a great thing for us to build on and a great thing for us to go into the second part of the season. I'm so proud of this team right now. They showed a lot of heart and character and we'll be ready to go on Sunday."
Iowa State extended its overtime unbeaten streak to nine games, dating back to the beginning of the 2002 season. It was ISU's first overtime game of the season. Baylor leads the overall series with Iowa State 6-3-1.
The Cyclones will conclude their six-game homestand on Sunday when they play host to Texas Tech at 1 p.m. at the ISU Soccer Complex. Texas Tech lost, 5-0, to Kansas on Friday night.
