AMES, Iowa-- Led by junior Amy Flores' two goals, ISU posted a 3-0 Big 12 win over visiting Texas Tech on Sunday at the ISU Soccer Complex. With the victory, ISU improves to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in Big 12 play. Texas Tech falls to 3-9 overall and 0-4 in league play.
Iowa State got all the offense it needed in the first half, beginning with Flores' first goal of the afternoon at the 3:18 mark when she collected a Renee de St. Aubin assist pass and connected on a shot from the right side. Twenty minutes later, junior Kristina Baumann tallied her first goal of the year when she nailed a direct shot from five yards out off an assist by senior Erin Weldon. Flores concluded the scoring with her third goal of the weekend and the season in the 31st minute from 12 yards out on the right side off an assist by freshman Brittanie Waddell. Flores scored her first goal of the year to lead the Cyclones to a 2-1 double overtime victory over Baylor on Friday night.
"Amy Flores did a great job of being able to take care of the ball," head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "She did a good job of getting where she needs to in the box and she's dominate in the air. She's someone people try to mark on and she's still dangerous. Her and Kristina (Baumann) are playing great soccer right now. Kristina is so dangerous and explosive and her ability to take on players one on one is very dynamic and she's going to be a threat against everyone we play."
Iowa State outshot the Red Raiders, 8-4, in the first half and had three corner kicks to Texas Tech's one. Freshman Joanna Haig had two saves in the first half. Haig and classmate Laura Boyer combined to give ISU its third shutout of the season and its first since a 1-0 victory over Youngstown State on Sept. 19.
In a quiet second half, the Cyclones registered seven shots, while holding Texas Tech to four shots. ISU had four corner kicks and three saves.
Baumann led the way with four shots with three of them coming on goal. Flores was efficient on the afternoon, converting two of her three shots for scores. Freshmen Erin Witte and Stephanie Kaphingst had two shots, while Christine Beatty, Kate Kirwan, Waddell and Laura Schweer each added one.
"I think we came out strong and did a good job of cleaning up the balls that were loose in the box," Hornbacher said. "Overall, I thought it was a great team effort. We wanted to get the shut out and the points (in the Big 12 standings). The kids stuck with the game plan. We did a good job, had a lot of scoring opportunities and got some goals. We're going to be able to take this momentum going into next weekend with Missouri."
With the victory Sunday, ISU matched its win total (5) from a year ago.
The Cyclones play the first of four straight road contests beginning on Sunday, Oct. 10 at Missouri. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
