AMES, Iowa - With one Big 12 Conference match left to be played, the Iowa State soccer team has earned a berth in the 2004 Big 12 Postseason Tournament. This year will mark the sixth time the Cyclones have qualified for the league tournament in the Cyclone program's nine-year history. ISU's seeding and opponent will be determined after the regular Big 12 season ends on Friday. The tournament will be held Nov. 3-7 at Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.
"We are very excited about the opportunity to compete in the Big 12 Tournament," said head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. "The team has improved in all facets of the game and has proven we can play with the best teams in our conference. We are now looking forward to finishing our regular season strong."
After starting off the 2004 season with a 1-5 record, the Cyclones turned things around and won six of their last 11 games. ISU went 4-2 in a homestand that included wins over Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Youngstown State, Baylor and Texas Tech. ISU's two losses, against Nebraska and Texas Tech, two teams that have spent time in the Top 25. Both losses were by a lone goal. The Cyclones then added league victories against Missouri, 2-0, and Oklahoma, 2-1, before falling to Oklahoma State, 2-1, Texas, 1-0 (OT) and No. 9 Texas A&M, 1-0.
Throughout the course of the season, the Cyclones have also had two conference athletes of the week (Erin Witte, Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, Oct. 4, and Joanna Haig, Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, Oct. 12) and made an appearance in the Soccer Buzz Central Region Poll at No. 15.
The Cyclones are led on the field defensively by freshman Joanna Haig. She is second in the Big 12 statistics with 86 saves and had a career-high 14 saves on Oct. 22 against Texas. Haig has been in goal for nearly 1400 minutes and has a goals-against average of 1.10, which ranks fifth in the Big 12. Offensively, Iowa State is led by junior Amy Flores, who has four goals and one assist for nine points. Sophomore Kate Kirwan and freshmen Erin Witte and Brittanie Waddell have three goals each and junior Kristina Baumann and freshman Stephanie Kaphingst have two goals. Freshman Renee de St. Aubin is first on the team in assists with three and Baumann leads the team in shots with 35.
ISU ends the 2004 Big 12 season at No. 6 Kansas on Friday at 3 p.m. and ends the regular season against Iowa at the ISU Soccer Complex on Sunday. The match starts at 1 p.m.
