LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Kansas Jayhawks used a spectacular defensive effort and an efficient offense to sweep Iowa State, 3-0, in a Big 12 match in Lawrence, Kan., this evening. KU won by game scores of 30-18, 30-24 and 30-28 to improve to 13-7 and 4-7 in league play this season. ISU drops to 8-13 overall and 1-11 in Big 12 action.
The Cyclones looked sluggish in game one, as the Jayhawks went on a 10-1 run midway through the game to build an 11-point lead. KU built the margin to as many as 15, leading 24-9 at one point. ISU put together a more effective offensive attack in the latter stages of game one, but the early Kansas lead was too much to overcome and the Jayhawks drew first blood with a 30-18 victory.
Kansas jumped on top early in game two, holding a 10-4 advantage in the initial stages. ISU fought back though, putting together a 9-3 run behind the serving of Brittany Dalager and true freshman Meghan Ferrie, who saw some of her first action with the starters in Big 12 play this season, and forced a Jayhawk timeout with a 15-13 lead. Iowa State owned an 18-16 advantage at one point, but Kansas went on a 14-8 run behind an impenetrable defense to win game two, 30-24. KU held Iowa State to a -.023 hitting percentage and stuffed seven blocks in the game.
The Cyclones were able to stop KU from piecing together the type of runs seen in the first two games, but the Jayhawks were effective nonetheless. Kansas built an early three-point advantage, adding to the lead periodically, while limiting ISU's offensive production. KU built a 19-13 lead midway through the final game, and played well enough down the stretch to hold off a late ISU rally to win the game and the match with a 30-28 game three decision.
Iowa State was out of sync offensively throughout the match, largely due to an extremely effective KU defensive performance. The Cyclones were held to a .050 hitting percentage in the match and were blocked 10 times by the Jayhawk front three. ISU passed poorly early, but recovered and was much more precise in games two and three.
"I thought we did a good job of stopping a few of the things KU does well," said ISU head coach Linda Crum. "Our middles did a good job of stopping their middle attack and our left side blockers, Jessen and Lorenzen, did a great job as well. Our passing got better as the game went on, it just wasn't quite enough."
Nicole Lorenzen, a redshirt sophomore from Fremont, led the ISU offensive efforts in the match with eight kills. Lorenzen, who set the team's season-high with 20 last week against Northern Iowa, tallied eight against the Jayhawks. It marked the sixth time this season Lorenzen has led the team in kills for a match, the highest such total on the team.
Katie Jessen, a sophomore from Kansas City, Mo., trailed Lorenzen by only one kill, as she recorded seven on the evening. Jessen, the team's leader in kills in 2004, added three total blocks to the ISU defensive effort.
The Iowa State defense was led by sophomore Katie Churm and senior Christine Smeele. The duo are one and two, respectively, on the team in digs this season. Smeele led the squad with 14 against the Jayhawks, while Churm added 10. The Cyclones have been solid in that department this season, as they came into the match ranked second in the Big 12 in digs per game.
The Cyclones tough 2004 schedule gets no easier this weekend, as ISU will play host to the No. 4 team in the nation in the Nebraska Cornhuskers. NU entered their Wednesday night match with an umblemished league record and a 14-game winning streak. The ISU-NU match will be played at Hilton Coliseum on Saturday, Oct. 30, beginning at 7 p.m.
