AMES, Iowa - Nine Cyclones were named to the 2004 Soccer Academic all-Big 12 Conference team, the league office announced Tuesday. Kelly Burke received Academic All-Big 12 first team honors for the third time in a row, while senior Laura Schweer, juniors Kristina Baumann, Deb Benakis and Amy Flores and sophomore Kate Kirwan are on the first team for the second time. Alli Coleman, Christine Beatty and Jennie Bireley are first-time honorees.
Burke, a senior midfielder, is dietetics major. The Plano, Texas, native is the sixth Iowa State soccer player to be named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team three times. She ranks eighth all-time and first among active Cyclones with 74 career games played.
Baumann is a junior forward from Naperville, Ill. A business major, she was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for her two goal, two assist performance against Iowa on Sunday. She was also named to the 2002 Academic All-Big 12 first team.
Benakis, a junior defender, is majoring in sports management. She has played nearly every minute of every contest this year. She's started 19 matches for the third consecutive season. She was named to the Nike Invitational all-tournament team. She was named to the first team.
Flores, who hails from Sacramento, Calif., is studying chemistry at Iowa State. The junior forward is tied for the team lead in goals with four and in points with 12. She scored the game-winning goal in each of ISU's consecutive wins over Baylor, Texas Tech and Missouri. She is a second-time first team honoree.
Schweer is a senior midfielder from Wheaton, Ill., who is majoring in marketing. She played in six games and started the regular season finale against Iowa. She has played in 50 games during her four-year career at Iowa State.
Kirwan, a redshirt sophomore, is undecided on a major. The Flower Mound, Texas, native ranks third on the team in points (9), goals (3) and assists (3).
Coleman, a defender, is a hotel and restaurant major from Los Altos, Calif. She is a first time member of the first team and has a 4.00 GPA. She played in 15 games, making six starts. She started five of the first six contests of the season on the back line.
Beatty, a sophomore from Woodbury, Minn., is a liberal arts and sciences major. She is making her first appearance on the list and has started all 19 games for the Cyclones and has seen times a several different positions.
Bireley, a sophomore midfielder from Plano, Texas, is majoring in chemical engineering. She is a first time honoree.
Iowa State sets a new program record with nine student-athletes named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team. The previous mark was seven in 2003. Iowa State will take on Kansas on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the first round of the 2004 Big 12 Tournament in San Antonio, Texas.
