AMES, Iowa - Iowa State head coach Rebecca Hornbacher welcomes eight student-athletes to the Cyclone soccer program, her second recruiting class at ISU. The class of 2004 includes players from five different states, with one Iowa native and a trio of teammates from Minnesota.
"I am very pleased with the fine group of young women that we are bringing into our program," Hornbacher said. "They are all very passionate about the game and will be a tremendous complement to the players we currently have in our program. This class includes very dynamic players with good speed and the ability to adapt to the physical play that characterizes the Big 12 Conference. They will be fine representatives of Iowa State University and will help us reach our goals in taking our program to new heights."
Renee de St. Aubin, a midfielder from Stillwater, Minn., was captain and team MVP at Stillwater High in 2003. She also received all-Midwest, all-state and all-conference recognition as a senior. She teamed with fellow newcomers Jo Haig and Beth Passman to lead their St. Croix Magnuson club team to a regional semifinal appearance in 2002. She has also been a member of the Minnesota '85 Olympic Development Program team. Three of de St. Aubin's siblings have played collegiate soccer.
"Renee has the special ability to create opportunities for everyone around her," Hornbacher said. "Her soccer IQ is outstanding and her dynamic play will be a huge asset in the midfield."
Jo Haig, a goalkeeper from Inver Grove Heights, Minn., is a two-time all-state and three-time all-conference honoree for Simley High. She competed in the 2003 Minnesota Senior All-Star game and was named team MVP. Joining fellow newcomers Renee de St. Aubin and Beth Passman on the St. Croix Magnuson club team, she won state cup titles each of the last three seasons. She has also been a member of the state ODP team since 1998. Haig is also an all-conference performer in gymnastics and track.
"Jo has a strong presence in the net and the ability to come up with the big-time save," Hornbacher said. "Her distribution with both her hands and feet are very strong."
Stephanie Kaphingst, a forward/midfielder from Leawood, Kan., is a captain for Blue Valley North High, the 2002 Kansas Class 6A state champion. She is a two-time member of the all-East Kansas League first team and was named first-team all-state in 2002. Kaphingst played on the Kansas ODP squad for six years and was named to the regional pool twice. As a member of the KCFC Alliance Dynamos club team, Kaphingst has served as team captain and has been on four state championship squads.
"Stephanie has the strength to dominate in the air, in tackles, and in 50-50 battles all over the field," Hornbacher said. "Her physical strength and vision to attack are going to be instrumental in our development of play."
Maggie McManemin, a forward from Dallas, Texas, helped the Episcopal School of Dallas to back-to-back Southern Prep Conference championships and received honorable mention all-SPC honors in 2002. As a member of the Dallas Texans club team, she won state cup titles each year from 2000-2003. The squad was also the 2003 WAGS champion and a semifinalist in the Disney tournament in 2002 and 2003. McManemin was also a member of the state '85 ODP squad and was named to the regional camp.
"Maggie is a very dynamic player with a tremendous touch on the ball," Hornbacher said. "She has a tireless work ethic and great attitude that will be a great asset to our team."
Beth Passman, a defender/midfielder from Woodbury, Minn., helped Woodbury High to a state title in 2003. She joined current Cyclone Christine Beatty on the 2002 state runner-up squad. Passman was named to the all-state squad her junior and senior seasons and is a three-time all-conference selection. She was a teammate of fellow newcomers Renee de St. Aubin and Jo Haig on the Minnesota '85 ODP team and the St. Croix Magnuson club team, a 2002 regional semifinalist.
"Beth possesses great speed and athleticism combined with the ability to serve the ball accurately and over distance," Hornbacher said. "She will be a tremendous addition to our offense from the flanks."
Erin Tudor, a defender from Houston, Texas, attends Langham Creek High School and competes for the Challenge Soccer Club. The squad captured Alamo Cup titles in 2001 and 2003, with Tudor receiving all-tournament team honors in 2001. She was a member of three South Texas Youth Soccer Association Snickers Cup championship teams and the 2002 team finished third in the national Snickers Cup. Tudor also played on the STYSA '85 ODP team.
"Erin is a solid defender who organizes well and has tremendous marking capabilities," Hornbacher said. "She also is very strong in the air and makes good decisions with her distribution from the back line."
Brittanie Waddell, a midfielder/forward from Urbandale, Iowa, was a member of the 2003 Iowa Class 2A state runner-up Urbandale squad and set school records for goals (35) and points (82) in a season. She joined current Cyclone Jess Villhauer on the 2003 Elite All-State team and the 2003 Class 2A all-state first team. Her Iowa ODP squad won titles at the Veldbjerg Cup and the Norway Cup. Waddell helped her West Des Moines Enfuego squad to the 2003 state cup title and was a three-time state runner-up with the Urbandale Premier.
"Brittanie is a feisty player who finds a way to get herself involved in the attack," Hornbacher said. "Her athleticism and determination will be a tremendous addition to our offense. We are pleased to have one of Iowa's finest players as a Cyclone."
Erin Witte, a forward from Sandy, Utah, is a second-team all-state honoree for Hillcrest High. At Valley View (Calif.) High, she was the squad's leading scorer and most valuable forward in 2001-02 and was a Division I first-team all-league selection that season. A member of the Utah Olympic Development Program, Witte is also a member of the Sparta United club team, the 2002 state cup champions.
"Erin Witte is a tall and tenacious forward that has the ability to dominate in the air," Hornbacher said. "Her strengths are in her ability to finish and her determination to involve herself in the attack."
