DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team used a pair of shutouts Saturday to capture the championship at the Capri Sun Refreshers Just for Girls tournament. The title is ISU's second straight at the event that included all four Division I collegiate teams from the state of Iowa.
Iowa State and Drake played a scoreless first half in the semifinal round, but Kristina Baumann scored for the Cyclones midway through the second half and ISU advanced 1-0. Iowa defeated Northern Iowa 2-0 in the other semifinal game.
The championship match mirrored the Cyclones' first contest of the day, with neither Iowa nor Iowa State scoring in the first half. ISU found an opportunity during the second half when Jess Villhauer was fouled while on the attack. Sophomore forward Kate Kirwan converted on the ensuing set piece and Iowa State came away with its second one-goal shutout victory of the day.
Freshman goalkeeper Laura Boyer, who redshirted the 2003 season, went the distance in both contests, picking up a pair of shutouts.
"It is great to see that many things we have been committed to improving in our training sessions are showing in match situations," Iowa State head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "The team worked very hard to get the results we were hoping to achieve. It was great to win the title again."
Iowa State will wrap up the spring season Saturday, April 24, when it hosts the Iowa State Cyclone Spring Classic. Creighton, Iowa and Minnesota will visit the ISU Soccer Complex, with games starting at 10:30 a.m.
