AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team closed the spring season going undefeated at the Iowa State Cyclone Spring Showcase Saturday. ISU opened the day with a 2-2 tie against Creighton, and the Cyclones defeated Minnesota 2-1 in the final game of the day.
Iowa State was on the attack early in the opening game against Creighton. Just over eight minutes into the game, Jess Villhauer sent a well-placed corner kick to the far post that Kate Kirwan headed in. Creighton answered with a goal by Kelan Brill less than three minutes later. ISU outshot Creighton 10-3 in the opening half.
Midway through the second half, ISU junior Kelly Burke took the ball down the right side and sent a pass back to the middle. Villhauer was waiting in front of the net and converted to give the Cyclones a one-goal edge. Creighton answered once again, as Ivonne Valentin knocked in a loose ball at the 59-minute mark to tie the game. Iowa State finished the game with an 18-6 edge in shots, and Creighton goalkeeper Jamie Hermann came up with 10 saves.
In the second game of the day, Iowa came up with two second-half goals in a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Minnesota. Danielle Oswald netted the game-winning goal for the Hawkeyes. Iowa blanked Creighton 2-0 in game three, getting a goal from Oswald in each half. Iowa goalkeeper Britta Vogele recorded 13 saves while allowing one goal on the day.
In the final game, Iowa State again took the early advantage in the first half. In the 16th minute, sophomore Amy Flores collected a pass in the box and sent a shot that was deflected by Minnesota goalkeeper Karli Kopietz. Kirwan collected the rebound and knocked it in for her second goal of the day.
The Cyclones struck again early in the second half on a set piece. After a Minnesota foul, Kristina Baumann sent the free kick into the box, where Flores headed the ball toward the goal. Kopietz could not make the save in time, and ISU took a two-goal lead. The Golden Gophers got a quick goal from Rebecca Dellaria just moments later, but ISU held on the rest of the half to come away with the victory. Flores tallied five shots in the contest, and Cyclone goalkeeper Laura Boyer recorded five saves.
"The team came out knowing we had to face two tough opponents," Iowa State head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "We did a great job creating opportunities in the first game, and we were able to possess and be dangerous offensively. With the wet conditions today, it was important to be organized defensively, and we did a better job defending as a group in the second game. We finished the spring season on a positive note, and we are looking forward to taking our play to a higher level in the fall."
