Iowa State opens the 2004 soccer season at home by playing host to the 2004 Cyclone Classic ... the Cyclones will battle Arizona on Friday night and face Drake on Sunday night ... Drake and Arizona will clash on Saturday night ... Iowa State returns seven starters from 2003's 5-10-4 squad ... the Cyclones will play 10 home games this year, the most since the 1997 season ... they open the season playing two of their first three games at home ... 2004 marks the ninth season for the Iowa State soccer program.
About Iowa State
The Cyclones finished tied for ninth in the Big 12 in 2003 and missed playing in their sixth Big 12 tournament by one game. The Cyclones needed to defeat Missouri to qualify for the tournament, but the Tigers came from behind to defeat ISU, 4-3 ... Iowa State returns its top scorers from each of the last two seasons in junior Kristina Baumann (2002) and redshirt sophomore Kate Kirwan (2003) ... finishing second in the Big 12 in scoring in conference games last season, Kirwan was named to the league's all-newcomer team and finished the 2003 campaign with eight goals and five assists ... in two seasons, Baumann has become one of ISU's all-time leading offensive players ... adding to the offensive power will be junior Amy Flores, who finished third on the team in scoring with five goals, sophomore Jess Villhauer, who was second on the squad in assists with four and newcomer Erin Witte, who begins her freshman campaign with a lot of potential and should be able to give the Cyclones some solid minutes.
On the defensive end, 2003 co-captain Erin Weldon returns, along with sophomores Christine Beatty and Meghan Schlenker ... the Cyclones back line will also be bolstered by senior Alli Coleman and junior Deb Benakis, who makes the switch from midfielder to defender in 2004.
Senior Karen Hasselman returns as ISU's lone experienced goalkeeper, having logged 85:26 minutes in goal last season, but add in freshmen Jo Haig and Laura Boyer and Iowa State has a trio of goalkeepers with alot of athleticism and talent.
Head Coach Rebecca Hornbacher
Rebecca Hornbacher is in her third season at Iowa State and has a 12-21-5 overall record ... last season she led the Cyclones to a 5-10-4 overall record, including a 2-1 start to the season ... under Hornbacher, Iowa State is 5-4-1 at home in Big 12 play ... in 2003, she led the Cyclones to a best-ever 3-0 start ... the squad's 2002 Big 12 record of 4-6 and the conference tournament appearance were both firsts for a first-year coach at Iowa State ... she has seven years of experience in Big 12 soccer as a player, assistant coach and head coach ... she was a member of Big 12 championship teams at Nebraska (1996, player) and Baylor (1998, graduate assistant coach).
About Arizona
Arizona (0-0-0) enters it's second season under head coach Dan Tobias ... the Wildcats welcome 12 newcomers to their 2004 lineup ... of the 10 returning letterwinners, nine started at least one game in 2003 and three were named to the all-Pac 10 team ... senior forward Candice Wilks led the Arizona offense last season with eight goals ... on defense, senior Lindsey Peeples will be relied on heavily ... Iowa State leads the overall series 1-0.
About Drake
Drake (0-0-0) returns all 11 starters from last year's team, which captured a share of the 2003 Missouri Valley Conference regular season championship and the No. 1 seed in the State Farm MVC Tournament ... head coach Corbin Stone was named the MVC Coach of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to a 13-7 mark, which included a 6-1 league mark in just the program's second season of existence ... junior Lindsey Portincaso was a second-team all-MVC selection and junior Karisa Vandello is back after starting all 18 games ... Drake leads the overall series 1-0.

Iowa State was picked by league coaches to finish ninth in the Big 12 Conference in this year's preseason poll.

Youth Movement
Of the 24 players on this year's team, only eight are upperclassmen. Karen Hasselman, Kelly Burke, Laura Schweer and Erin Weldon are seniors, while Kristina Baumann, Amy Flores and Deb Benakis are juniors. The rest of the team is made of up sophomores (6) and freshmen (10). As a freshman last season, Kate Kirwin led the team with eight goals and five assists.
Most Improved Player
Junior midfielder Alli Coleman was named ISU's most improved player last season ... in her first season at Iowa State, Coleman played in 17 games and scored her first collegiate goal against Oklahoma State ... she came to ISU as a junior walk-on in 2003 after transferring from BYU ... husband is ISU wrestler Scott Coleman.
2004 Team Captains
In a vote by team members, senior Kelly Burke and junior Deb Benakis were elected captains for the 2004 season ... Burke, a midfielder, played in 19 games last season ... as one of three seniors on the team, Burke is a great leader on and off the field with her athleticism and mental toughness ... Benakis, who will make the switch from midfielder to defender this season, played and started in all 19 games last season ... she scored four goals and added one assist ... Benakis is a very physical, athletic player who has great speed and the ability to win the ball in the air.
Iowa State Draws at Night
Iowa State drew crowds of 382 and 452 for the first two night games ever played at the ISU Soccer Complex last season ... both crowds rank among the top ten all-time crowds for Cyclone soccer home games ... ISU's 2003 home attendance average of 259 ranks second in school history (362 in 1999).
Iowa State Finishes Strong in Extra Sessions
Iowa State's double-overtime tie against Baylor in 2003 extended the Cyclones' overtime unbeaten streak to eight games ... ISU and Wisconsin tied 1-1 on the opening night of the Wisconsin Invitational on Sept. 12 and the Cyclones also tied Illinois State 1-1 on the road on Sept. 19 ... in Big 12 play, ISU went to overtime against Baylor and Oklahoma for the third year in a row ... ISU was 3-0-1 in overtime games in 2002, including victories over Baylor and Oklahoma ... Kristina Baumann scored two of her three game-winning goals in overtime in 2002 ... Iowa State is 9-4-1 all-time in overtime contests.
