Iowa State returns home this weekend for the first of six consecutive home games when it plays host to the 2004 Nike Invitational ... Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Youngstown State and Creighton round out the tournament field ... the Cyclones will battle Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Friday night and will face Youngstown State on Sunday afternoon ... ISU will not face Creighton ... the Cyclones fell to both No. 19 Pepperdine and Cal-Santa Barbara last weekend ... ISU lost, 3-0, to Pepperdine and 2-1 to Cal-Santa Barbara ... juniors Kristina Baumann and Amy Flores lead the Cyclones with seven shots so far this season ... sophomore Jess Villhauer has six shots and freshman Renee de St. Aubin has five shots ... freshmen Beth Passman, Brittanie Waddell and Stephanie Kaphingst have scored goals for ISU.
About Iowa State
The Cyclones (1-5) suffered road losses to Pepperdine and Cal-State Santa Barbara last weekend, losing 3-0 to Pepperdine and 2-1 to the Gauchos ... The Cyclones were held without a shot against Pepperdine, marking the first time in school history ISU did not register a shot ... only twice before has ISU been held to one shot, with the last time occurring on Aug. 31, 2001 in a 6-0 loss to Illinois ... ISU snapped its three-game scoreless streak against Cal-Santa Barbara when freshman Stephanie Kaphingst scored in the first half off an assist from fellow classmate Renee de St. Aubin ... all three of ISU's goals this season have been scored by freshmen ... freshman goaltender Jo Haig has 22 saves on the season, good for fifth in the Big 12 ... she had a good night against North Carolina State on Sept. 3, nabbing both of NC State's shots on goal ... she also had a save against USC on Sept. 5 ... she had one of the best outings of any ISU goaltender in her first game against Arizona on Aug. 27 ... she faced 17 shots and had eight saves, only allowing one goal ... the Cyclones have played solid defense this season, as they have only allowed nine goals against and lead their opponents in saves, 36-13.
Cyclones Flounder out West
Iowa State headed west last weekend to play some tough competition in No. 19 Pepperdine and Cal-Santa Barbara and came up a bit short ... the Cyclones struggled against Pepperdine, allowing the Wave to get off 15 shots and not registering a shot, but ISU's Jo Haig and Laura Boyer combined for seven saves ... ISU lost 3-0 ... Against Cal-Santa Barbara, the Cyclones scored their first goal in three games when freshman Stephanie Kaphingst hit the net in the first half, but ISU couldn't keep up the defensive pressure in the second half as UCSB scored two quick goals to record a 2-1 win.
Head Coach Rebecca Hornbacher
Rebecca Hornbacher is in her third season at Iowa State and has a 13-26-5 overall record ... with the win against Drake on Aug. 29, she moved up to second on ISU's all-time wins list with 13 ... former head coach Cathy Klein had 41 wins as the Cyclone mentor ... last season she led the Cyclones to a 5-10-4 overall record, including a 2-1 start to the season ... under Hornbacher, Iowa State is 5-4-1 at home in Big 12 play ... in 2003, she led the Cyclones to a best-ever 3-0 start ... the squad's 2002 Big 12 record of 4-6 and the conference tournament appearance were both firsts for a first-year coach at Iowa State ... she has seven years of experience in Big 12 soccer as a player, assistant coach and head coach ... she was a member of Big 12 championship teams at Nebraska (1996, player) and Baylor (1998, graduate assistant coach).

Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1-5-1) is in its eighth season under head coach Michael Moynihan ... the Panthers are starting a two-game road streak after losing to DePaul, 3-2, in double overtime at home on Sept. 12 ... the Panthers are led by Andrea Kramer, who has a team-high four goals, one assist and 12 shots ... one of her four goals was a game-winning goal ... goaltender Kerri St. Aubin has logged almost 600 minutes and has 24 saves ... Iowa State and Wisconsin-Milwaukee have met once before with the Panthers winning the game, 4-1.
About Youngstown State Youngstown State (0-4-1) heads into the weekend looking to bounce back after a 5-0 loss to North Carolina State on Sept. 12 ... YSU will take on Creighton on Friday before playing Iowa State on Sunday ... head coach Anthony James is in his first season with the Penguins and is in his fifth season as a head coach ... in the five games so far this season, Youngstown State holds an advantage of 54-21 in saves ... this is the first meeting between the two teams.
About Creighton
Creighton (2-2-1) heads into the tournament fresh off a 2-2 tie against George Washington in Omaha on Sept. 12 ... Creighton will take on Youngstown State and Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the weekend's tournament ... head coach Bruce Erickson is in his sixth year with the Bluejays and has a 53-48-8 overall record ... the Bluejays are looking to keep their three-match winning streak alive at the tournament this weekend ... Creighton has averaged 32.3 shots in its last three matches compared to their opponents 25 shots combined ... Iowa State and Creighton do not play each other in the Nike Invitational.
Youth Movement
Of the 24 players on this year's team, only eight are upperclassmen. Karen Hasselman, Kelly Burke, Laura Schweer, Erin Weldon and Alli Coleman are seniors, while Kristina Baumann, Amy Flores and Deb Benakis are juniors. The rest of the team is made of up sophomores (5) and freshmen (10). Three current freshmen on the team, Beth Passman, Brittanie Waddell and Stephanie Kaphingst have scored all of ISU's goals so far this season.
The Minnesota Connection
Not only do Beth Passman and Jo Haig both hail from the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes, but they also have something else in common ... each had outstanding debuts in their first collegiate weekends of soccer ... Haig, an Inver Grove Heights, Minn., native, started at goaltender against Arizona and Drake and recorded nine saves ... Against Arizona, Haig had eight of those saves on 17 Arizona shots ... Against North Carolina State and South Carolina,, Haig combined for 10 saves ... Passman, from Woodbury, Minn., recorded her first goal of the season against Drake ... she took the pass from junior Kristina Baumann and put it past the goaltender at the 6:41 mark in the first half ... a third Minnesota freshman, Renee de St. Aubin, took four shots, including two shots on goal, against Arizona and Drake ... the trio (Passman, Haig, de St. Aubin) also played on the same club team (St. Croix) ... Passman and Christine Beatty (Woodbury, Minn.) were prep teammates.
In Goal
Iowa State is in very capable hands in the goaltender position this season ... redshirt freshman Laura Boyer and freshman Jo Haig have each seen time in front of the net and both have proved to be netminders the Cyclones can rely on ... Haig has played and started in five of ISU's six games so far and has logged almost 400 minutes along with a team-high 22 saves. ... her save total is fifth in the Big 12 ... Boyer has played in three games and has 14 saves so far, which is 10th in the Big 12.
2004 Team Captains
In a vote by team members, senior Kelly Burke and junior Deb Benakis are team captains for the 2004 season ... Burke, a midfielder, has played in all six games and has one shot ... she played in 19 games last season ... as one of five seniors on the team, Burke is a great leader on and off the field with her atheticism and mental toughness ... Benakis, who made the switch from midfielder to defender this season, has played in all six games so far this season and has two shots ... she played and started in all 19 games last season ... she scored four goals and added one assist ... Benakis is a very physical, athletic player who has great speed and the ability to win the ball in the air.
Iowa State Draws at Night
Iowa State drew crowds of 382 and 452 for the first two night games ever played at the ISU Soccer Complex last season ... both crowds rank among the top 10 all-time crowds for Cyclone soccer home games ... ISU's 2003 home attendance average of 259 ranks second in school history (362 in 1999) ... Iowa State had 375 in attendance against Arizona on Aug. 29, 11th on the all-time attendance list.

Iowa State opens up Big 12 Conference play next weekend when Colorado and Nebraska come to Ames. The Cyclones will take on Colorado on Friday, Sept. 24, starting at 7 p.m., while ISU and Nebraska will clash on Sunday, Sept. 26, starting at 1 p.m. Both games are at the ISU Soccer Complex.
