NORMAN, Okla. - The Iowa State volleyball team cruised to a 3-1 victory in its first league road game of the season and handed previously unbeaten Oklahoma its first loss in action at the Howard McCasland Field House this evening. The Cyclones captured games one, two and four for the victory. ISU had not beaten the Sooners in Norman since 1998, and the victory marked the second Big 12 road win in as many seasons, a feat never accomplished by an Iowa State team since the inception of the Big 12 in 1997.
The Cyclones victory was fueled by an efficient offensive effort. As a team, ISU was 68 for 187 in attacks, good for a .214 hitting percentage on the night. The Cyclones were unstoppable in the final game of the match, hitting at an impressive .326 clip to finish off OU. Iowa State held the Sooners to a .143 percentage defensively and recorded eight team blocks.
Brittany Dalager, whose offensive performance had been limited early in the season with a slight shoulder injury, turned in her best outing of the campaign, as she led ISU offensively. The senior from Minneota, Minn., smashed 19 kills on a season-high 54 attempts. Dalager notched her second straight double-double as she also added 17 digs to the ISU defensive effort.
Katie Jessen continued her outstanding play from ISU's loss to Texas A&M, as the sophomore pounded 17 kills on 38 attempts for the Cyclones. The Kansas City, Mo., native added six digs for ISU and recorded a service ace and one block.
Nicole Lorenzen, a redshirt sophomore outside hitter from Fremont, was the most efficient offensive player for the victorious Cyclones. Lorenzen tallied 11 kills on 29 attempts for a .310 hitting percentage for the match. Lorenzen added five digs and four block assists for ISU on the defensive side of the net.
Amanda Craig, ISU's junior setter, was the beneficiary of the Cyclone efficiency. Craig, a native of West Des Moines, racked up 53 assists in the match, her third-best total of the season. Craig also registered 10 digs and four kills of her own in the winning effort.
Katie Churm, a sophomore libero from Irvine, Calif., was ISU's leader in digs once again. Churm notched 22 for ISU, the third-highest total for a Cyclone player this season. Churm leads ISU in digs and digs per game, and her outstanding defensive play has been a key to the efficiency of the Cyclone attack.
Iowa State moves to 7-2 overall, 1-1 in Big 12 play. The Cyclones next match will be another road contest at Texas on Wednesday, Sept. 22, in Austin, Texas. ISU recorded its first-ever victory over the Longhorns in its last meeting, an exciting 3-2 victory in Ames last November.
