AUSTIN, Texas - The Iowa State volleyball team opened up week two of Big 12 play with a disappointing 3-0 loss to No. 22 Texas in Austin tonight. The Cyclones were swept with game scores of 30-17, 30-11 and 30-22. The Longhorns dominated every facet of the match, and moved their record to a perfect 10-0.
Texas, who has lost only two games all season, had an excellent offensive night against the normally solid ISU defense. The Longhorns racked up 51 kills to Iowa State's 26 and hit with amazing efficiency, pounding out kills at a .440 clip for the match. Mira Topic, the Big 12 leader in hitting percentage, led UT with 22 kills on 36 attempts, good for a .472 percentage on the evening. ISU was held to a .059 percentage, and hurt its own cause with 13 service errors.
"Tonight was a very disappointing effort for this team," said head coach Linda Crum. "We didn't have the focus, the communication or the work effort necessary to play with a team like Texas, and the game scores showed that."
Katie Kruenegel, Iowa State's junior middle blocker, was the Cyclone leader offensively. Kruenegel recorded nine kills and notched two block assists for ISU. Brittany Dalager, a senior from Minneota, Minn., tallied six kills and was the only Cyclone to reach double-figures in digs with 10. Amanda Craig had 23 assists and a service ace for Iowa State.
The Cyclones move to 7-3 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 play. ISU returns to Hilton Coliseum for a match-up with Texas Tech on Saturday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m.
