LINCOLN, Neb. - The Iowa State soccer team did the unthinkable, again on Friday. ISU upset No. 22 Nebraska for their first win over the Huskers in program history, defeating another ranked opponent they were previously winless against. At 11-5-3 overall, 6-3-1 in the Big 12, the Cyclones sealed their best conference finish in school history.
Iowa State is guaranteed no worse than a No. 3 seed in the conference tournament, which begins on Wednesday in San Antonio, Texas. Their 19 points in the conference standings and 24 goals in Big 12 play are the most ever by an Iowa State squad.
"I am so proud of our kids and I fee we have just put ourselves in a perfect position for an at-large NCAA bid," Iowa State head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "Our focus right now is to go down to San Antonio and fight for a Big 12 tournament title."
ISU can still clinch the program's first-ever Big 12 regular season championship, but needs Friday night losses by both No. 11 Texas A&M and Colorado. ISU's previous top Big 12 regular season finish was sixth, both coming in the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
"For us to be able to compete for a regular season championship shows how far we've come in such a short period of time," Hornbacher said.
Iowa State only took three shots to Nebraska's 12 in the first period, but made one of them count. The Cyclones got on the board early, as sophomore Renee de St. Aubin tallied her sixth goal of the season on a penalty kick, 5:27 into the match. Nebraska goalkeeper Jamie Klages made a diving save on de St. Aubin's initial attempt, but the sophomore midfielder collected the carom off the post and struck the rebound into an open net.

ISU wasted no time in the second half as senior Kristina Baumann put the game away early in the 52nd minute as she headed-in a corner kick from Jess Villhauer for a 2-0 lead. The goal was the first of the season for Baumann, who has fought off nagging injuries all season. With 15 goals in her career, Baumann is now tied for fifth on the all-time list.
Sophomore goalkeeper Joanna Haig faced 26 shots, recording a game-high six saves, picking up her second-consecutive shutout, her third in conference play. The Inver Grove Heights, Minn., native now has seven on the season, the most in ISU history.
"Joanna was unbelievable in the net again and our defense continued to come up with big time stops," Hornbacher said.
"Our team has so much confidence right now," Haig said. "We took the momentum from last weekends wins and carried it over to today's match. "Our team played amazing as it was a whole team effort."
The Cyclones entered the season 2-24-1 all-time vs. ranked opponents, but with the win over NU improved to 2-0 this season. ISU's other win over a ranked opponent they were winless against came back on Oct. 7, over then-No. 18 Texas A&M.
Iowa State came into the match 0-9 vs. the Huskers, being outscored 44-5 in that span.
The Cyclones will wait to see their official Big 12 Tournament seeding on Sunday as Nebraska travels to Texas Tech for a makeup game to finalize the cluttered standings. The top six teams were within one game of each other at the days' outset.
