WACO, Texas -Kiel Uhl and Lisa Koll led their respective cross country teams at the Big 12 Conference Championship. Uhl finished seventh among 98 competitors, while Koll came in 27th in a field of 99 runners. Colorado continued their domination of Big 12 cross country with first place team finishes for the men and women.
Kiel Uhl, a Prole native, finished seventh among 98 athletes. The freshman ran the 8K in a time of 24:06. Benson Chesang, a junior from Kansas, won the event with a clocking of 23:45.
"I feel really good," said Uhl. "This was a good step, and my performance boosted my confidence a little bit. I hope to have my best race yet at regionals in two weeks."
David Rotich was the second man to finish for the Cyclones. He came in 36th overall in a time of 25:12. Jory Zunich was the third ISU finisher with 50th place, followed by fellow freshman Richard Newton (56th). John Ricardi finished the day with a 58th place finish. As a team, the men finished in sixth place with 188 points. They finished just behind Missouri, who had 182 points. Colorado won with 44 points, followed by Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma State.
"Kiel Uhl did a tremendous job," said Cyclone men's head cross country coach Corey Ihmels. "He stayed in the top five for most of the race, and it was great that he could keep up his great run. But finishing sixth as a team was a little disappointing. We just didn't run as well as we could have, and we were only six points away from being in the top five. Overall I thought we could have done better.
Fort Dodge native Lisa Koll ran the 6K in a time of 21:59. Koll finished 27th among a field of 99 competitors. Colorado's Christine Bolf won the race in a time of 20:24.
Sophomore Teresa Booth, originally hailing from Stanton, Iowa, finished 61st overall with a time of 23:22. Dawn Caffrey (23:58) and Jessi Wild (23:59) were next across the line for ISU, finishing 77th and 78th, respectively. Sophomore Mackenzie Madison crossed the line in 24:01. Overall the team finished with 289 points. Colorado won the women's division with 38 points.
"We ran okay," said ISU women's head cross country coach Dick Lee. "Realistically we were going to finish seventh to ninth as a team. We finished ninth, so that was about what we predicted we would do. Lisa Koll and Teresa Booth had good races. The heat got to us a little bit at the end--it was about 75 or 80 degrees. But overall we did okay."
The Cyclones' next endeavor comes on November 12, when they will compete at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Iowa City. A release containing quotes from Cyclone coaches and players will be posted shortly after the meet.
