Dick Lee is in his 18th season as Iowa State’s head women’s track and cross country coach. In 2002, his teams finished in the top 20 in both the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championship meets. Iowa State athletes continue to make their mark on the conference and NCAA level. In all, Lee’s runners have earned All-America honors 55 times and claimed 52 individual-conference titles since he became the Cyclone’s head coach in 1986.

Five-time All-America high jumper Gina Rickert, a Verizon Academic all-District honoree graduated after the 2003 track seasons. Junior thrower Susan Sherman joins veteran middle distance performers Jessica Huff of Marshalltown and Kelly Brinkman, along with sprinter Sheba Clarke as this year’s strong points of the squad.

After a 13th place finish at the 2002 NCAA indoor championships, Lee graduated five-time Big 12 shot put champion and six-time All-American Lisa Griebel, who was also the fifth-place finisher at U.S. Track and Field Outdoor Championships in 2001. Another loss to graduation was two-time All-American and two-time Big 12 pentathlon champion Barbara Szlendakova and indoor NCAA All-American and Big 12 800-meter champion, Lenka Kalabova.

Lee’s 2000 and 1998 teams hosted the Big 12 indoor meet and earned fourth-place honors. In 1998, All-America long jumper Trina Radske, Griebel, and Iowans Alienor Gilchrist (Ames) in the mile and Leah Elbert (Iowa City) in the high jump paced Iowa State’s effort.

At the 1998 NCAA indoor meet, Erin Bresnan earned All-America accolades in the 800-meter run. Radske claimed her second All-America finish in the long jump. Griebel (shot put) and All-American Kris Curnyn (weight throw) also represented the Cyclones at the national meet.

ISU placed fifth at the 1998 Big 12 outdoor meet. Radske earned All-America honors for the third time. Curnyn earned All-America honors in the hammer throw. Griebel, who represented the U.S. on its junior world track and field team, also qualified for the NCAA meet. Szlendakova earned a spot in the heptathlon field.

The 1996 ISU cross country team earned its second-straight NCAA Championship berth and was District V co-champion. The 48-year-old Lee previously served as an assistant coach at Iowa State for five seasons prior to a two-year stint as the head track coach at Wartburg College.

The 1990 Big Eight Cross Country Coach of the Year commands a program that has earned a reputation for consistent success. His former athletes include NCAA champions Karen Glerum (mile) and Edith Nakiyingi (800 meters).

A 1978 graduate of the University of Minnesota-Morris, Lee served as an assistant coach at South Dakota State, where the cross country team finished second in NCAA Division II competition and the cross country and track teams were conference champions. Lee serves as the women’s cross country Midwest Regional representative. He began this position at the conclusion of the 1997 season. Lee’s wife, Ann, is a teacher at Ames High School and they are the parents of 17-year old, Brandon.
