AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team dropped a five-game heartbreaker to Baylor, 3-2 (27-30, 30-27, 30-23, 22-30, 13-15), on Saturday night at Hilton Coliseum despite recording a season-high 10 service aces in the match.
With the loss, ISU drops to 13-11 overall and 6-7 in the Big 12 while Baylor improves to 14-10 overall and 5-7 in conference play.
"Baylor was a much different team than the first time we played them," said ISU head coach Christy Johnson. "They had two of their best players back on the court and there was evidence of that with the kind of wins they picked up coming into the match."
The Bears, who have won five of their last six matches, hit .163 and used five Stella Odion kills to take the first game 30-27.
Baylor jumped out to an 18-12 lead on a kill by Odion and never looked back in going up 1-0.
ISU was able to bounce back in the second game as a kill by Klein gave the Cyclones their first lead of the game at 6-5. Iowa State held Baylor to a .150 hitting percentage and rode six kills by Klein to the second game win.
The Cyclones used a 14-0 run in game three to erase a 20-13 Baylor lead. Nicole Lorenzen had three service aces in serving the Cyclones to 13 straight points and giving them a 27-20 lead. Back-to-back kills by Katie Jessen and Erin Boeve gave ISU a 30-23 win and a 2-1 advantage in the match. Katie Kruenegel provided a much needed spark for ISU, downing three kills in four attempts in the third game.
Baylor hit .289 and got another five kills from Odion in the fourth game to force a fifth game. After opening up a 10-8 lead, Baylor scored five of the next six points to go up 15-9 and coast to a 30-22 win.
The fifth game saw 10 tie scores but Baylor was able to come out on top, taking a 15-13 win and capturing the match 3-2. The Bears out-hit ISU .289 to .095 in the extra frame.
After a Nicole Lorenzen kill knotted the game up at 13, Baylor notched two straight points to get the win.
"I don't feel bad about going five games with a team like that," said Johnson. "I am just disappointed that we got unassertive. That was our first five game match this season and it was good to get some work in a tough game like that."
Jessen led the Cyclones with 15 kills while Klein and Boeve chipped in 14 and 13, respectively. Katie Churm led four players with double-figure digs, notching 22 in the loss. Amanda Craig had another strong match from the setter position, posting a near triple-double with 51 assists, 16 digs and five kills.
Off the bench, Kruenegel had nine kills in 21 attempts for a .238 hitting percentage.
Odion had 15 kills to lead Baylor, who had five players in double-figures.
ISU will host Kansas State in another Big 12 match on Wednesday. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
