SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Iowa State women's soccer team, who controlled most of the second half but were unable to overcome a halftime deficit, falling 1-0 to Texas in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday. The Cyclones had their three-game winning streak snapped and fall to 0-7-1 all-time in the conference tournament.
"We had some great chances but the Texas defense came out strong tonight," Iowa State head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "They kept us from penetrating and kept us from capitalizing on our opportunities. We left it on the field tonight and I'm proud of what we've accomplished this season as we really showed we deserve a look at postseason play."
ISU put their best offense together in the second half, but Texas goalie Dianna Pfenniger continued to come up with big saves. With two minutes remaining, senior Kristina Baumann was fed with a loose ball that trickled past a UT defender inside the 18-yard box. Baumann took the ball in, forced Pfenninger to commit, but her shot into the left corner of the goal was cleared away by a Longhorn defender.
Texas took the lead for good with 5:01 left in the first period as Caitlin Kennedy scored her sixth goal off a long assist from Julie Gailey. Gailey crossed the ball to Kennedy, streaking down the right side unmarked, who then put the ball past Cyclone goalkeeper Joanna Haig into the back-left corner of the net.
Iowa State had another good chance to score midway through the second half as Kate Kirwan took a cleared corner and blasted it just below the crossbar, but UT goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger leaped and made the save. Freshman Meghan Smith followed that up just a minute later with a blast from outside the 18-yard box to the far post, but again Pfenninger came up with one of her two saves. The Longhorns out-shot Iowa State nine to five in the first half, but ISU countered with a 11-7 margin in the second frame. Sophomore goalkeeper Joanna Haig recorded a game-high five saves in the match.
Iowa State finished the regular season tied for second in the Big 12 Conference, the best in school history, with Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas. Their No. 3 seed was the highest in 10 years of soccer at ISU. Their 6-3-1 conference record and 22 goals scored in Big 12 action were the most ever by a Cyclone squad. The 2005 season included the program's first wins over Nebraska and Texas A&M, both who were nationally-ranked at the time. . ISU falls to 1-12 vs. the Longhorns all time, the lone Cyclone win coming back in 1999, a 2-0 decision in Austin. Texas defeated Iowa State in their one previous meeting this season, 2-1 on Oct. 14 in Ames.
The Cyclones will wait to see their NCAA Tournament fate on Monday as the selection show will be broadcasted on ESPN News at 5 p.m. EST.
