AMES, Iowa - Young men and women's Cyclone cross country teams will compete at the Midwest Regional in Iowa City on Saturday. The men will run a 10K at 11 a.m., and the women are scheduled to race a 6K at 12:15 p.m. Oklahoma State, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota and Missouri should give Iowa State good competition.
Prole native Kiel Uhl has been the top finisher in every meet for the Iowa State men this season. He had an impressive seventh place finish at the Big 12 Championship and is expected to be a top performer at the Midwest Regional. Junior David Rotich has also had an impressive season.
"Kiel's got a legitimate chance to make it to the NCAA Championships," said ISU cross country men's head coach Coach Ihmels. "He could potentially place fourth or fifth in this meet. As a team, we hope to race well. We're kind of in the same spot as we were at Big 12s. There are several tough teams in the region, and we are ranked seventh in the region."
Freshman Lisa Koll from Fort Dodge hopes to continue her outstanding season at the regional meet. She has finished first for the women in every meet this season thus far. Koll placed 27th of 99 athletes at the Big 12 Championship.
"We hope to race better than we did at the conference meet," said Cyclone women's head coach Dick Lee. "We want to compete at a higher level. It would be really great if we would finish in the top ten. Lisa Koll has been running as number one all season. She hopes to place in the top 20 or 25. There are lots of highly ranked teams in the region, and the top end will be strong, so we'll see what happens Saturday." A release containing quotes from Cyclone players and coaches will be posted on www.cyclones.com shortly upon completion of the women's race.
