AMES, Iowa - Sophomore Ashley killeen's two RBI single in the sixth inning helped Iowa State rally to defeat Oklahoma State, 2-1, for the Cyclones first Big 12 win of 2005 on Saturday at the Southwest Athletic Complex. The victory improves ISU to 13-24 and snaps a nine-game losing streak dating back to March 31. The win also helps the Cyclones match their victory total for all of 2004.
"I am really proud of the kids today," said Iowa State coach Ruth Crowe. "We've been in a lot of close games this year nd it's nice to see it finally pay off in a win. They played outstanding."
All of the game's scoring occurred in the sixth inning when OSU broke the scoreless tie with a run in the top half of the inning. Shanel Scott reached on an infield hit and then she stole second to move into scoring position. Scott advanced to third on a single to right center by Stephanie Nicholson. Scott then came home on a sacrifice fly to center by Courtney Totte.
However, the Cyclones responded in the bottom half of the sixth starting with a walk by junior Cary Akins. An error by Cowgirl third baseman Lacy Darity on what should have been a routine groundout allowed shophomore Jessica Quade to reach first and junior Kristen Karanzias, in to pinch run for Akins, advanced to second. Karanzias and Wood, into pinch run for Quade, each advanced to third and second, respectively, on a groundout by sophomore Katie Rechling. Killeen then stepped to the plate and laced a hit back up the middle to center to score Karanzias and Wood to give ISU the lead for good.
"Ashley's (Killeen) hit was key for us," Crowe said. "It really broke open the game."
Iowa State then closed out the win in the seventh when starting pitcher Alyssa Ransom retired the side in order. In the complete game victory, Ransom scattered five hits and struck out six to improve to 7-14 on the season.
"Alyssa pitched a great game today," Crowe stated. "It was probably her best performance all year and we played solid defense behind her."
It is Iowa State's first trumph over the Cowgirls since 2000 and its first win over Oklahoma State in Ames since 1994.
The two squads meet in the series finale on Sunday slated for a noon first pitch.
