TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The No. 9 Iowa state gymnastics team placed second at the NCAA Central Region Championships April 9th at Coleman Coliseum. The final team score of 195.625 qualified ISU for national competition for only the second time in school history. No. 4 Alabama placed first in the region with a 196.675, while No. 21 Auburn (194.80) took third, No. 23 Kentucky finished fourth (193.325), No. 27 Kent State placed fifth (192.425) and No. 16 Utah State was sixth (192.50).
The Cyclones last appeared at NCAA Championships in 2000 at Boise State, where they finished eighth. This will be the first team head coach K.J. Kindler has brought to the national meet.Â
The Cyclones started out on the balance beam, earning a 48.775. Sophomore Ashley Alden received a 9.80 to lead the team. Right behind her was junior Laura-Kay Powell who earned a 9.775, while junior Erin Dethloff and redshirt freshman Jade Kvach both received a 9.750.
ISU posted a 49.175 on the floor. Sophomore Janet Anson matched her season-high score of 9.925 to place second, while Alden, Dethloff and Kacey Oiness each marked a 9.85.
The Cyclone vault routine totaled a 47.90, led by Anson's 9.875, which earned her a share of second place. Juniors Jessica Oney and Dethloff each notched a 9.75.
Finishing on the uneven bars, Dethloff had the highest Cyclone score with a 9.85, which earned her a share of first place. Alden and Powell both received 9.8 to tie for sixth and Katie Lasher earned a 9.775.Â
Anson claimed third in the all-around (39.250) and Dethloff tied for fourth (39.20).
