AMES, Iowa - Iowa State freshman goalkeeper Joanna Haig (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) was one of 32 soccer players nationally to be invited to the U.S. Under-20 National Team Training Camp. Haig, who was named to Soccer Buzz magazine's Central Region all-freshman team, was first invited to the training camps for the U.S. Under-21 Women's National Soccer Team in January and again in March.
In a unique women's soccer event, the U.S. Women's National Team program is holding its largest-ever training camp from May 22-28 with the U.S. Under-20 and Under-21 women's teams each bringing 32-player rosters to the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
This is the first training camp for the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team since FIFA shifted the age group of its only youth world championship for women up by one year. It also gives new U.S. Under-20 head coach Tim Schulz a first look at his pool as he begins to form the team that will attempt to qualify for the 2006 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Championship to be held in Russia. Schulz is the head coach of the Colorado Rush club team and coached future Cyclones Hannah Swanbom and Meghan Smith, who will attend ISU this fall.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for Joanna," ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "She is a fantastic person and a gifted athlete. She is coming off an outstanding freshman year and her best years are ahead of her."
Haig, who was named to the Big 12 all-newcomer team last year, started 19 games in goal for the Cyclones and accumulated over 1,500 minutes. She was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 12) after recording 13 saves in a 2-0 win against Missouri. Haig recorded 94 saves throughout the season, which ranked second in the Big 12, and earned eight victories during the 2004 season, the most for a Cyclone goalkeeper since 1999.
