AMES, Iowa - Two soccer players with ties to Iowa State, sophomore Maggie McManemin and incoming freshman Leslie Hill, will be competing on youth squads that advanced to the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships by winning Southern Regional titles this week in Plano, Texas. McManemin led her Dallas Texans Red 86 team to the under-19 girls title while Hill helped the Sting Royal 87 squad to the Regional championship. Teams from four regions will compete for national titles at their respective age groups in Orlando, Florida, from July 26-31.
McManemin, a Dallas native, played in eight matches for Iowa State as a true freshman. She has extensive youth club team experience, having played on several state-title winning teams in her prep career. It will be her third trip to Orlando, having played on qualifying teams in 2002 and 2003.
Hill, who committed to the Cyclones and will join the team in the fall of 2005, helped her squad captured the under-18 girls regional championship. The Plano native scored eight goals in regional competition.
Several other current and each of the six incoming ISU players competed at various regional sites throughout the country this week. Current Cyclones that participated include sophomores Joanna Haig, Beth Passman, Renee de St. Aubrin, Stephanie Kaphingst, Brittanie Waddell and Erin Tudor. Incoming freshmen Meghan Smith, Hannah Swanbom, Amanda Purple, Elisa Berzins and Rebecca Kennedy also competed on regional-qualifying teams this week.
The U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship Series provides a forum for nearly 124,000 soccer players on 7,200 teams nationwide. The National Championships will cap a yearlong series of competitions for both boys in girls in multiple age brackets.
