AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State women's tennis team fell to No. 9 Baylor this afternoon in Ames. The Cyclones took an early lead in the conference matchup with great doubles play in the No. 2 and 3 positions, but failed to gain any victories in singles play.
Senior Elizabeth Chermel and freshman Kara Hickey paired up in the No. 2 doubles spot to defeat Baylor's Klara Zrustova and Iva Mihaylova, 8-5. The No. 3 doubles team, consisting of junior Danielle Uscinski and sophomore Chrissy Derouin, also captured a win for the Cyclones after beating Baylor's Zuzana Krchnakova and Rachel Clark, 8-3.
Baylor finished the day by dominating in singles play against Iowa State. The Bears took all six matches and achieved a 6-1 win over the Cyclones.
"Our doubles were really focused," head coach Michele Conlon said. "Everyone came out strong in the beginning of their singles matches. We played really well up and down the line. Kara Hickey's Big 12 debut was outstanding and Danielle Uscinski played a great three set match."
The Cyclones will continue action against Wisconsin on February 10 at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wis. at 4 p.m.
