AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Will Blalock scored a career-high 24 points and Curtis Stinson grabbed a steal with 4.7 seconds left to lead Iowa State past Kansas State 72-70 Saturday night in the Big 12 opener for both teams.
Stinson scored 17 points and had eight assists for Iowa State (11-3, 1-0 Big 12), which almost blew a 13-point lead late in the second half but held on for its fifth straight win.
Cartier Martin buried a 3-pointer with 50 seconds left to bring Kansas State (9-3, 0-1) within 70-69. Tasheed Carr turned the ball over on Iowa State's next possession, but Kansas State's David Hoskins gave it right back to the Cyclones by traveling with 16 seconds left.
Will Blalock missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Stinson jumped into a Wildcats passing lane to force a turnover. He then hit two free throws to push Iowa State's lead to 72-69.
Martin hit a free throw with 2.3 seconds left, but his intentional miss on the second shot was recovered by the Cyclones.
Kansas State shot 71 percent from the field in the second half, and David Hoskins capped a 15-4 run with a three-point play to bring the Wildcats within 68-66 with 1:39 left.
John Neal buried 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions, and Stinson and Blalock added fast-break layups as Iowa State closed the first half with a 21-7 run. The Cyclones jumped ahead by as many as 14 in the opening half and led 39-27 at the break.
Iowa State forced Kansas State into 13 turnovers in the opening half, scoring 21 points off Wildcat miscues.
Hoskins scored 25 points and Martin added 21 for Kansas State.
The Wildcats fell to 0-3 on the road and lost on the road against Iowa State for the seventh straight time.
