AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State University men's basketball coach Greg McDermott has suspended junior guard Mike Taylor indefinitely for academic reasons.
"Mike has not met the academic expectations that I have for student-athletes on the Iowa State men's basketball team," McDermott said. "I've shared with Mike that the commitment to academics is a required first step toward being a member of this team."
McDermott, in his first year at the helm of the Cyclones, said Taylor will miss the first exhibition game and that his return to the team is dependent upon improved classroom performance.
"I've shared with Mike that his future is in his hands," McDermott said. "Taking away coveted playing time is a measure that I felt was appropriate and would create a renewed commitment from Mike."
Taylor can participate in all team activities during his suspension. Taylor will regain his playing privileges if McDermott has seen improvement in his academic commitment.
Taylor, a 6-2 guard from Milwaukee, transferred to Iowa State after two seasons at Chipola Junior College. Taylor averaged 12.5 points and 3.8 assists for the 2006 Chipola JC club, which finished sixth in the final NJCAA poll.
