AMES, Iowa- Erin Witte scored her second goal of the season, but it was not enough as Iowa State fell, 2-1, in double-overtime to Missouri at the ISU Soccer Complex. Both Iowa State and Missouri had chances to break the 1-1 tie late in regulation, but excellent efforts by ISU goalkeeper Ann Gleason and MU goalkeeper Mallory Forst forced the match into overtime.
The final goal was scored by the Tiger's Crystal Wagner, her first of the season, at the 105:52 mark. Kristin Andrighetto led the Tigers with 12 shots in the match, including two shots that bounced off the ISU posts.
Missouri wasted no time going after the Cyclone defense and outshot the Cyclones 10-6 in the first period. The Tigers struck first, taking a 1-0 lead 23 minutes into the game. Mizzou's Aria Hudetz found the rebound from a missed MU free kick and drilled her shot into the back of the net, scoring her first goal of the season.
Freshman Elise Reid tried to bring Iowa State back on the counter attack, taking a fast break down into Missouri territory. Reid dropped a pass off to Lauren Odino, whose shot from 10 yards out missed wide to the right. Reid had seven shots in the match, with several near misses for the Cyclones.
After halftime, Iowa State's offense ignited and took advantage of a bobbled MU save. ISU's Amanda Nimtz took a shot that Forst initially saved, but dropped. Witte found the rebound and touched the ball into the open right side of the net to even the score, 1-1.
During the rest of regulation and into the first overtime, both teams battled to maintain possession of the ball in the aggressive second half of play. However, the second half comeback was not enough to carry the Cyclones to a victory.
With 4:12 remaining in the second overtime, Mizzou's Lindsay McCoy set a free kick that found Wagner in front of the goal. Wagner took the pass with one touch and put the game-winning goal into the back of the net.
Gleason had a season-high 10 saves on the night and finished the season with 119 saves, 2.52 goals against average, three shutouts and 1856:05 minutes in goal.
Iowa State ends the season at 6-14-0, 2-8 in the Big 12 and also does not qualify for the Big 12 Conference Tournament. This is the first time since 2003 that the Cyclones have not made an appearance in San Antonio, Texas, for postseason play.
Missouri finished the season just above .500 with a 10-9-0 record overall, but with a 2-8 in the Big 12, does not qualify for the conference tournament.
