AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State was out blocked, 13 to eight, for just the second time all season as they fell to No. 11 Texas, 3-0 (18-30, 20-30, 21-30), on Tuesday night at Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State got 12 kills from Lauren Cummings but hit just .063 as its record fell to 11-5 overall and 3-3 in Big 12 play. Texas improves to 10-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
Texas got a double-double from Ashley Engle, who had 16 kills and 13 digs in the match. The Longhorns also out dug the Cyclones, 52 to 40, despite a team-high 13 digs from Katie Churm.
“The things that we normally do well we didn't do tonight,” said head coach Christy Johnson. “We normally control the ball when its off the block or tips and I didn't see that tonight. Texas out dug us by 12 and that's not usual, we are usually out digging and out blocking teams and we didn't do either of those tonight. I'm sure it was some of the things Texas did and their game plan but I didn't think we played well.”
Texas got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 7-1 lead in game one. The Longhorns hit just .171 in the first game but were able to get the 30-18 win and go up 1-0.
The Cyclones played better in the second game but it was Texas that scored the big points when it needed them. After ISU took a 13-12 lead the Longhorns scored nine of the next 10 points to take control of the game. Texas went on to win the game 30-20 and put the Cyclones in an 0-2 hole.
Game three saw Iowa State lead 10-9 before Texas again made a big run, scoring five straight to go up 14-10. The Longhorns never looked back, grabbing a 30-21 win and the sweep.
Iowa State will look to get back on track when it faces No. 17 Missouri on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum. Admission to the match is free.
