FORT DODGE, Iowa ? After opening the 2006 ? 07 season with a dominating 46-0 victory over Buena Vista Friday, five Iowa State wrestlers claimed individual titles at the Harold Nichols Open hosted by Iowa Central Community College.
Trent Paulson took home his third Harold Nichols title at 157-pounds. Travis Paulson (165) and Kurt Backes (197) each earned their second titles, while redshirt freshmen Mitch Mueller (141) and Jake Varner (184) each won their first tournament. Four wrestlers, Nick Fanthorpe (125), Nick Gallick (133), Aron Scott (149) and David Zabriskie (HWT), nabbed runner-up honors.
Trent Paulson dominated his way through the 157-pound bracket en route to earning his third Harold Nichols Open title. Receiving an opening round bye, Paulson then pinned Kenny Michael of
Earning his second title at 165-pounds, Travis Paulson cruised through to competition recording three decisions before meeting up with Nick Baima of
Bumping up from 184-pounds to 197-pounds, Backes took home his first title at the new weight. Backes opened the tournament with a bye and then pinned his first opponent in 2:34. Backes then tallied two decisions, 7-3 over Dana's Wade Jordan and 8-3 over Jon Jones of Iowa Central. In the title match, Backes scored a 7-5 decision over Nebraska-Omaha's Jacob Maars.
Mueller won his first two matches by fall at 141 pounds and then took a 15-4 major decision over
Redshirt freshman Jake Varner pinned three of his four opponents, taking top honors at 184 pounds. Varner, who already has four pins early this season, stuck each of his competitors in less than four minutes. In the finals he won with a 7-1 decision of Wisconsin-La Crosse's Jason Lulloff.
Finishing second for
Nick Gallick collected three victories at 133-pounds, including a win by fall.
At 149-pounds, Aron Scott recorded an opening bout pin and then won his next three matches by decision. Taking on Nebraska-Omaha's Todd Meneely in the final, Scott came up short and lost by a 7-4 decision.
Also taking finishing as a runner-up was heavyweight David Zabriskie. Zabriskie began the day with an opening round win by fall and then won his next two matches with 4-2 and 3-2 decisions, respectively.
Laramie Shaffer (133) and Cyler Sanderson (149) each finished third for the Cyclones. Placing fourth were 174-pounder Grant Turner and Jason Knipp at 149-pounds.
