NORMAN, Okla. ? Iowa State got 18 kills from Katie Jessen and 12 from Jessica Klein but fell, 3-2 (16-30, 30-28, 30-25, 21-30, 5-15), to No. 13 Oklahoma Wednesday night in Norman.
With the loss, Iowa State falls to 19-10 overall and 11-8 in Big 12 play with one match against Colorado remaining. The Sooners improve to 25-5 overall and 16-3 in conference action.
Erin Boeve joined Jessen and Klein in double-figures with 11 kills. Nicole Lorenzen had a team-high 13 digs in the match. Katie Churm had 12 digs and four service aces for the Cyclones. Kaylee Manns added 49 assists, nine digs and three service aces.
Oklahoma was paced by Joanna Schmitt, who had a match-high 19 kills. Sarah Weiland also added 15 kills for OU.
Oklahoma dominated the first game from the very beginning. The Sooners scored the first three points and jumped out to an 8-2 lead. After an Iowa State timeout and a kill by Jessen, OU rattled off eight straight to all but put the Cyclones away. The Sooners, who held the Cyclones to a -.028 hitting percentage, went on to win 30-16.
The Cyclones were able to even the match at 1-1 with an action packed 30-28 win in game two.
In the second game, ISU hit just .083 but was able to hold the Sooners to a low percentage as well at .093. The Cyclones took a quick 4-2 lead but OU bounced back, scoring the next four points to extend their lead to 6-4. The game went back-and-forth with the Sooners leading 26-25 before a pair of kills from Katie Jessen put Iowa State up 27-26. The Sooners would again tie it up but the Cyclones got a block assist from Manns and Boeve to give them a 28-27 lead. Following an Oklahoma timeout, Manns served up her second ace of the match and the Cyclones took the win on Jessen's ninth kill.
After falling behind 7-2 in the third, ISU made a steady climb to get back into the game, eventually tying it for the first time at 15-15 on another Manns' ace. The Cyclones then fell behind 21-19 but rallied to score the next four points and take a 23-21 lead. ISU never looked back en route to a 30-25 win that put it ahead 2-1 in the match.
Iowa State got its offense working in the third game, hitting .333 to Oklahoma's .256.
Oklahoma raced out to a 20-11 lead in the fourth game and cruised to a 30-21 win, forcing a fifth game. The Sooners blistered the ball at a .438 clip in the game, while holding Iowa State to just a .130 hitting percentage.
In the fifth and deciding game, OU took a quick 6-3 lead, forcing an Iowa State timeout. An Anna Monsen ace and an attack error by the Cyclones made it 8-3 Sooners when the teams switched sides. Oklahoma cruised from there, scoring seven of the next nine points to win the game, 15-5.
Iowa State will close out the regular season with a Saturday match against Colorado at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones will celebrate senior day against the Buffaloes, with first serve slated for 2 p.m.
