This is the third year of the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series...the school that excels in competition- athletic and academic- will be crowned champion of the head-to-head series between the Cyclones and the Hawkeyes...Iowa has taken an early 7-4 lead, gaining wins in football (3 points), soccer (2 points) and wrestling (2 points)...Iowa State received points in volleyball (2 points) and women's basketball (2 points)...the women's swimming and diving meet is on Friday (2 points)...the all-time series is tied at 1-1, with Iowa winning the inaugural title and ISU winning last season.
Cyclone Update
Iowa State lost its second consecutive game to a Missouri Valley Conference team, falling 80-78 to Drake Sunday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum...the loss snapped ISU's 13-game home win streak against the Bulldogs...the last time Drake beat ISU in Hilton Coliseum was on Dec. 4, 1978 (86-77)...the game had a crazy finish...ISU was down by 16 points with 11:37 remaining in the game, but the Cyclones mounted a furious comeback, tying the game at 78-78 on a Dodie Dunson layup with :16 left in the game...Drake's Al Stewart answered with a lay-up on its next possession to give the Bulldogs an 80-78 lead with :04 left...ISU had one last chance, as Mike Taylor drove the court and passed to Dunson, who pumped faked and then drilled a trey, but it was a fraction of a second too late...Dunson, who was one of five Cyclones in double figures in scoring, had a phenomenal game for the Cyclones, scoring a career-high 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor and a 4-of-5 effort from 3-point range...he scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half...Dunson's four treys helped ISU register 10 for the game, the second double-digit 3-pointer made effort this season...ISU has made 38-of-91 3-pointers (41.7 percent) in its last four games...Wesley Johnson recorded his third double-double of the season with a career-high 16 points and 10 rebounds, going 5-for-10 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line...Johnson also had two blocks, giving him a team-high 13 swats on the year...he is on pace to break the Cyclone freshman blocked shot record currently held by Jared Homan (40)...Rahshon Clark tallied 13 points and nine boards in the loss...Clark made three treys, increasing his career total to 72, moving past Julius Michalik to No. 14 on ISU career 3-pointer made chart...ISU struggled to stop the Bulldogs on offense, giving up a season-high 47.0 percent from the floor...it was only the second time this year where ISU allowed an opponent to shoot above 40 percent...it was also just the third time this season where an opponent outshot the Cyclones...Ross Marsden missed his second consecutive game because of the flu.

Iowa is 4-5 after a 57-55 loss at home to Northern Iowa on Tuesday...senior Adam Haluska, who played his freshman season at Iowa State, is the team leader, averaging 17.4 points and 4.4 rebounds...Haluska, a native of Carroll, Iowa, poured in a career-high 31 points against Coppin State last Saturday to help him earn MVP honors at the Hawkeye Challenge...Haluska, who drilled six treys against Coppin State, leads the team with 25 3-pointers...he is shooting 94.4 percent from the free-throw line, which ranks in the top-20 nationally...freshman Tyler Smith has had a good start to his career...the Pulaski, Tenn., native is averaging 14.2 points and 4.9 rebounds...he registered a career-high 28 points in the win vs. Toledo and led Iowa against UNI with 20 points...junior college transfer Justin Johnson has taken over some point guard duties with the injury to Mike Henderson...Johnson is averaging 6.9 points and is shooting 47.4 percent (18-38 3FG) from 3-point range...the Hawks are shooting 75.4 percent from the free-throw line this season, which ranks in the top-50 nationally.

Getting To The Line
In the preseason, Greg McDermott talked about the importance of getting to the free-throw line to increase your chances to win...so far, so good for ISU, as the Cyclones have been able to capitalize at the free-throw line...ISU has attempted more free-throw attempts than its opponent in six of eight games this season, holding a 150-112 (+4.8) advantage at the charity stripe...what a difference from last season when the Cyclones were outshot at the foul line, 735-548 (-6.2)...Minnesota and Northern Iowa - ISU's two road games - are the only two teams to shoot more free throws than ISU.
Don't Foul!
Keeping fouls at a minimum has allowed ISU to have an advantage at the free-throw line this season...the Cyclones currently rank sixth nationally in fewest fouls per game at 14.25...the Cyclones have not had a single player foul out of a game this season compared to last year when a Cyclone fouled out 22 times...in 16 halves this season, the Cyclones have allowed their opponents to have just four double-bonus situations (10 fouls) at the free-throw line...only one team this season (Northern Iowa) has tallied more fouls than ISU.
Clark Is The Leader
Junior Rahshon Clark is the undisputed leader of the Cyclone team...now in his third-year as a starter and first year as team captain, Clark is ISU's most experienced and most seasoned player...he brings to the table incredible athleticsm and jumping ability...the junior has drastically improved his rebounding, leading the team on the boards at 8.9 rpg, which ranks second in the Big 12...his long arms and quick jumping ability allows him to outrebound bigger and stronger opponents...Clark has tallied eight or more rebounds in seven of eight games this season, including three double-digit rebounding efforts (12-Eastern Illinois, 11-Minnesota, 10-Northern Iowa)...he has two double-doubles on the season.
Taylor Made
Mike Taylor's high-energy style of play and outstanding shooting has excited ISU fans so far in the young season...he can stretch the defense with his range and explode to the hoop with his quickness...he tallied one of the greatest second halves in ISU history vs. Minnesota, recording 25 of his career-high 33 points after intermission...he tallied a career-high six 3-pointers, all in the second half vs. the Gophers...he followed that game with 22 points in the first half vs. Lake Superior State, drilling his first six treys...dating back to the Minnesota game, he had a streak of nine consecutive 3-pointers made...he leads the team in scoring (16.4), 3-pointers (21) and assists (38).
Taylor's Incredible Run Earns Him Big 12 Co-Rookie Of The Week Honors
Mike Taylor posted arguably the greatest back-to-back half performances in school history against Minnesota and Lake Superior State, helping him earn Big 12 Co-Rookie of the Week honors...in the second half vs. Minnesota, Taylor had 25 points and six treys...he answered that performance in his next game, tallying 22 points and six treys in the first half vs. Lake Superior State...at one point, Taylor had a string of nine consecutive 3-pointers made...here is a closer look at his consecutive half performances:
Wesley Johnson- A Diamond In The Rough
True freshman Wesley Johnson has done a fantastic job early in his rookie season at ISU...Johnson has started all eight games, averaging 11.6 ppg and 7.0 rpg...Johnson had fallen through the recruiting cracks after his prep school shut down in his senior season, thus not playing basketball in his final year...ISU assistant coach Jean Prioleau had recruited him when he was an assistant at Wichita State...when Prioleau was hired at ISU and the Cyclones needed players late in the March 2006 signing period, Prioleau contacted Johnson and convinced him to come to ISU...Johnson leads the team with three double-doubles this season...he also leads ISU in blocks with 13, recording a career-high three vs. Norfolk State and Northern Iowa...he has recorded a block in seven of eight games this season...despite his lack of size, Wesley's incredible leaping ability allows him to be an effective offensive rebounder...22 of his 56 rebounds have come on the offensive end, averaging 2.7 offensive rebounds per game...he has scored in double figures in six of eight games this season...in his last three games, he is averaging 14.7 points and hitting 61.5 percent from the field (16-26 FG).
Jessan Gray Is Most Improved
Without a doubt, Jessan Gray has been the most improved player on the Cyclone roster...Gray averaged 4.3 ppg and 1.3 rpg last year in his first season with the Cyclones after transferring from Tyler Junior College in Texas...as ISU's only scholarship senior, Gray has given ISU a huge spark from the bench...he is averaging 7.9 points and 4.3 rebounds in 19.4 minutes of action...Gray has been extremely efficient as well, hitting 54.2 percent from the field (26-48 FG) and 45.5 percent from downtown (5-11 3FG)...Gray was 6-of-7 from the floor vs. Lake Superior State en route to a career-high 14 points...he followed that game with 11 points and a career-high nine boards vs. Northern Iowa...in ISU's win over Minnesota, Gray scored all nine of his points in the second half, including a 3-pointer that tied the game and a strong move to the hoop that give ISU a 5-point lead late in the game...in his last four games, Gray is averaging 9.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and is shooting 16-of-29 from the floor (55.1 percent) and 50 percent (4-8 3FG) from 3-point range.
