AMES, Iowa - Big 12 Coach of the Year Rebecca Hornbacher announced a competitive 2006 Iowa State soccer schedule Tuesday, a schedule that includes eight home dates and games against seven teams that played in the 2005 College Cup.
"This is a tough schedule for us after coming off of one of the best seasons in school history," Hornbacher said. "Our strength of schedule might be the toughest its ever been and I know our team will rise up to the challenge and build on the tradition accomplished in 2005."
The Cyclones are coming off their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and will open the 2006 season at Notre Dame, Saturday, Aug. 26 at 1 p.m. The Irish were the 2004 National Champions but were defeated in the quarterfinals of the College Cup by eventual champion Portland, the same team that knocked ISU out in the first round.
The 2006 schedule also includes the second-annual Big 12/Big Ten Challenge as Iowa State will play at Minnesota on Sept. 1 and at Northwestern on Sept. 3
ISU will compete against all three instate schools (Drake, Northern Iowa and Iowa) for the first time in school history. The Cyclones will take on Drake on Aug. 28 and Iowa Sept. 12, both in Ames, and will take on Northern Iowa as part of the Bluejay Tournament in Omaha on Sept. 10.
Iowa State will take on another 2005 College Cup competitor, Weber State as part of a two-game slate that also includes a game at Colorado College on Sept. 15 and 17 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Cyclones will host Nebraska at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24 to open the Big 12 Conference schedule. ISU defeated the Huskers for the first time in school history with a 2-0 decision in Lincoln this past season. Iowa State will entertain conference foes Texas Tech, Kansas and a Colorado squad that was one of the five College Cup participants from the Big 12 a season ago.
ISU will have road games at Baylor, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Texas and Texas A&M. Iowa State will play the regular season and conference champion Aggies in College Station, Texas for the fourth time in five years. The Cyclones upset A&M 1-0 a year ago for the first time in the 10-year history of women's soccer at ISU on a last-second header by Stephanie Kaphingst.
The team will host the Cardinal and Gold Exhibition to begin the season on Aug. 19 at the ISU Soccer Complex.
