AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team held its annual banquet Sunday in the atrium of the Jacobson Athletic Building. Big 12 Coach of the Year Rebecca Hornbacher and her staff honored several student-athletes as the team garnered the first NCAA tournament berth in school history.
Senior forward Amy Flores was named Most Valuable Player by her teammates. Flores led Iowa State with 17 points on eight goals and one assist. The Sacramento, Calif., native, finished her career second on the ISU all-time list for goals scored, trailing only Jo Hinks, who scored 31 (1996-97). Flores also earned the Iron Woman Award, recognizing excellence in strength and conditioning during the off-season.
Freshman defender Elisa Berzins received the Cyclone Power award, which recognizes outstanding effort and dedication in training sessions. The award was chosen by the strength and conditioning staff. Berzins was a key contributer in Iowa State's 1-0 upset over No. 18 Texas A&M. The Omaha, Neb., native entered the match with just 33 seconds left and delivered a perfectly executed cross to Stephanie Kaphingst, who headed-in the game winner with just 12 seconds left.
Junior Kate Kirwan garnered the Consistency Award, given to a player who embraces her role on the team and signifies her reliability throughout the season. Kirwan started in every game this season, transitioning to defense after two years on the ISU front line.
Goalkeeper Joanna Haig followed up the most impressive season by a keeper in ISU history by earning the Leadership Award. Haig had seven shutouts during the 2005 campaign, breaking Lynley Hilligoss' 1999 record. The Inver Grove Heights, Minn., native was named second-team all-Big 12 by the league office and finished at least in the top two in four major regular season statistical categories, including save percentage (1st, .836), saves (2, 97), saves per game (2nd, 5.11) and shutouts (T1st, 7). The Cyclone Excellence Award was given to senior Leslie Hansell. The honoree exemplified a positive attitude and showed excellence both on and off the field. The Ankeny, Iowa, native scored the game-winning goal in Iowa State's 3-0 win vs. Oklahoma.
Sophomore Stephanie Kaphingst earned the Hard Hat Award, recognizing work ethic in addition to physical and mental toughness. Kaphingst finished the season third on the team in goals with four, including game-winners vs. No. 18 Texas A&M and Purdue.
Freshman Beth Haggy was named ISU's Most Improved Player for the 2005 season. A native of Bloomington, Minn., Haggy saw significant action in the Cyclone's 6-2 win vs. Texas Tech and picked up the first save of her career.
The Cyclones honored freshman Amanda Purple with the Newcomer of the Year award. Purple helped anchor an Iowa State defense that recorded a school-record seven shutouts. The Dallas native started in 16 of 19 games, recording two assists.
The four ISU seniors, Kristina Baumann, Deb Benakis, Amy Flores and Leslie Hansell were honored for their leadership contributions in the most successful season of Cyclone soccer.
All team members were given NCAA participation medals as Iowa State garnered the school and the state of Iowa's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
