AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team, fresh off the school's first-ever NCAA Tournament berth, will travel to Omaha, Neb., this weekend to participate in Kicks For a Cure, an event to raise money and awareness in the fight against women's cancer.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for our young women to come together with other student-athletes in the field of competition and work together to fight for a tremendous cause," head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "It is our hope that we can continue to be involved in this event in the years to come."
Former U.S. Senator David Karnes and daughters Korey, Kalen, Kara and Laurel are serving as honorary chairs of the event. All of the proceeds will benefit Liz's Legacy, the fund started by the Karnes family in memory of the late Dr. Liz Karnes. These funds will be directed toward research projects at both the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center and the Hereditary Cancer Institute at Creighton University.
The weekend kicks off with a banquet for teams, sponsors and families on Friday at Forte in the Tip Top Building in downtown Omaha. Saturday will include a full day of exhibition games at the new Morrison Stadium on the Creighton University campus.
Iowa State and Nebraska-Omaha will get the action started at 1:00 p.m., followed by Yale and Kansas at 3 p.m., Nebraska and Minnesota at 5 p.m. and Creighton taking on Notre Dame in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m. An autograph session with the participants will take place immediately following each game. Games will have two 45-minute halves with a running clock in addition to subs on any stoppage.
The Cyclones have been practicing for over a month now and are eager to play against top-notch competition.
"It will be a great opportunity for us to carry many of the things we have been focusing on in training to the game," Hornbacher said. "We have seen a lot of individual and team development in the last couple of months and we look to build on that going into this weekend."
