WACO, Texas - Ashley Monceaux hit a single in the seventh inning to give No. 18 Baylor a 1-0 win over Iowa State, in a pitcher's duel that featured just seven hits between the teams, at Getterman Stadium in Waco, Texas.
Alyssa Ransom (12-14) tossed a great game for ISU despite being dealt the loss. Ransom allowed just four hits and a lone seventh inning run in the game.
Lisa Ferguson (17-11) was equally as strong in her effort for Baylor, yielding three hits and holding the Cyclones scoreless to pick up the win.
Ransom was in control for much of the game but the Bears strung together two seventh inning hits, with a balk in between, to do the damage.
Alex Culyer led off the seventh with a hit and advanced to second on a balk by the Cyclone pitcher. Monceaux jumped on Ransom's next pitch and drove it to right field for a single. Culyer raced in just in front of Stephanie Mosley's throw to score the game winning run.
The Cyclones (23-24, 5-10 Big 12) threatened to score on a few different occasions but Ferguson was able to get some key outs to end the threats.
In the fourth, Iowa State put runners on first and second with no outs after Ashley Killeen singled and Katie Reichling walked. Ferguson got out of the jam, retiring the next three Cyclone hitters.
Killeen, Fallon Johnson and Beth Tharp recorded the only hits for the Cyclones.
Monceaux and Chelsi Lake recorded two hits each for Baylor (35-17, 11-5 Big 12).
The Cyclones and Bears will battle again tomorrow at Getterman Stadium in Waco. First pitch is slated for noon. The game can be heard for free at BaylorBears.com.
