WACO, Texas - Iowa State senior Erica Lynn, competing in her final Big 12 championships, finished second in the heptathlon competition to give the Iowa State women's team their first points at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Waco, Texas.
Lynn, who was in second after day one of the event, dropped into third after the long jump, but bounced back into second following the javelin throw. Lynn had a throw of 113-10, a new career record for her. Lynn's final score in the competition was 5,194 points.
"It was hard because I am used to improving each meet, but I did a lot of things really well this weekend," Lynn said. "I was disappointed in my high jump, but I was proud that I could come back from it and was still able to compete. It's an awesome accomplishment and I'm thankful I've had the training to compete. The javelin throw was a big relief. I've been working so hard this year to perfect it and it was a big boost because it put me into second place."
Lynn finished sixth place in the heptathlon at the 2005 Big 12 outdoor championships and third in the pentathlon at the 2006 Big 12 indoor championships, making this her highest finish in Big 12 championships. Lynn will compete two more times on Sunday in the 4x100 meter relay and the high jump.
In the discus competition, sophomore Chase Madison finished in third with a throw of 189-2. Brian Robison from Texas won the event with a throw of 195-10. Madison will compete on Sunday in the shot put.
"He had his second best throw of the year and was competing up against two throwers who are ranked higher than him in the country," said throws coach Dan O'Mara. "He wasn't feeling his greatest, but he threw the best he could. He's looking forward to the shot put and putting in a strong effort there."
Multi-event competitor Neil Hines finished fourth in the decathlon after performing career records in the javelin throw (196-6) and pole vault (15-3). After the 110-meter hurdles, Hines dropped down to ninth place, but pulled back up to secure the fourth-place finish.
"We didn't think he was going to be able to compete because of his hip injury until right before the start of the hurdles," said men's head coach Steve Lynn. "His time was behind average, but once he started he ended up having a good day."
Hines finished the competition with a score of 7,259 points, a new career record by 159 points. Hines will compete on Sunday in the javelin throw where he will look to regionally qualify.
Senior Tony Douglas had a season best leap in the long jump. His jump of 24-10 ? was good enough for a fourth-place finish against some of the best jumpers in the country. Chris Gillis of Baylor won the event with a leap of 26-1 ?.
"Tony's been struggling to get on the board lately, but he was able to get a good, clean jump in right away to make it to finals," said coach Lynn. "I think his jumping today sets him up nice for the rest of the season."
In the 1,500-meter run, All-American David Rotich qualified for the final to be run on Sunday. Rotich crossed the line with a time of 3:50.47, the fifth best in the field. Three-time All-American Ada Anderson also qualified for finals in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:08.76.
"Ada felt good and she eased up on the homestretch," said sprints and hurdles coach Scott Roberts. "I think she can come out tomorrow and put in a good race. Today was about surviving and that's what she went out there and did."
Teammate Sara Boisen qualified for competition Sunday in the 400-meter hurdles. Boisen had a time of 1:00.06, her second best of the season and the fifth best in the field.
"She looked great and then came up on the seventh hurdle and stumbled a bit," Roberts said. "It looked like she was going to go down, but she recovered like a champ and still had a great time. She should be able to come out tomorrow and get under 60."
Day three of competition will continue on Sunday with the start of the field events at 11 a.m. with the javelin throw. Running events will begin with the 4x100 meter relay at 5:30.
