Cyclone Soccer Topped by No. 5 Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind.- Iowa State soccer head coach Rebecca Hornbacher called Saturday's season opener at No.5 Notre Dame a learning experience. The team will now focus on its home-opener against Drake at 7 p.m. on Monday after falling to the Fighting Irish, 9-0, on Saturday.

“Notre Dame is an outstanding championship caliber team,” said Hornbacher. “They capitalized on four of their first six chances. We need to make corrections on our defensive mistakes. We played everyone that was healthy to play and everyone left everything they had on the field. Now we will move forward and learn from our mental breakdowns.”

Notre Dame controlled the ball for most of the game, allowing Iowa State only two shots on goal. Leslie Hill and Stephanie Kaphingst each took one shot on goal in the second half, trying to get the Cyclone offense started. Erin Witte had ISU's best opportunity of the day, but was unlucky as she took a shot from 30 yards out that bounced off the post.

Notre Dame forwards Michele Weissenhofer and Kerri Hanks scored two goals each in the contest. Weissenhofer also added two assists in her colligate debut. With the loss, Iowa State falls to 0-1, while Notre Dame is 1-0.

Iowa State, which made its first NCAA Tournament appearance a season ago, will host instate rival Drake at the ISU Soccer Complex Monday.
