LAWRENCE, Kan. - Rodney Hamblin and Joe Cermak helped guide the Iowa State men' s golf team to a second-place finish after the first day of competition at the Jayhawk Invitational Monday at Alvamar Golf Club. Hamblin and Cermak, who also paced ISU at the season-opening Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., stand in fourth and ninth in the race for medalist honors, respectively. ISU trails host and two-time defending event champion University of Kansas by 10 strokes. Jayhawk senior Gary Woodland leads all participants with a 135, six shots ahead of Jordan Irwin from the University of Houston.
Hamblin who broke his personal best 54-hole record in Colorado Springs with a 217, continued his torrid start to being his senior season. Hamblin came out of the gates with a team-low first-round 70 and finished with a two-round total of 144. Cermak, a junior, finished one stroke behind Hamblin as he scored a team-low second-round score of 71 en route to a 145. Cermak and Hamblin finished tied for 23rd as the Cyclones finished sixth in their first action of the season at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invite hosted by the Air Force Academy.
Freshman Cameron White improved from his Iowa State debut and shot a two-round total of 148, good for a tie for 19th place. White was tied for 16th place after one round of action at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational after scoring a 73 in his first round as a Cyclone. He tied his career-low 73 in the second-round.
Chris Baker rebounded from a first-round 77 to score a 73 in the second round as the junior remains in a tie for 31st. Baker led the Cyclones in stroke average last season and he was a Big 12 all-tournament selection during his freshman year.
Kirkwood Community College transfer Cedric Bertin rounded out the ISU scoring as the junior college All-American finished with a two-round total of 151. Bertin finished tied for 45th in Colorado Springs after carding his personal ISU-low score of 72 in the second round.
Freshman Ross Menke competed independently and registered a two-round total of 149. The Sioux Falls, S.D., native, stands in a tie for 25th. Menke also competed openly at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational where he finished tied for 67th.
Tomorrow's final round is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
