LAWRENCE, Kan. ? Erin Boeve had 17 kills and a career-high seven digs and Jessica Klein hit .474 with 10 kills, two solo blocks and three block assists to lead Iowa State to a 3-0 (30-28, 30-22, 30-24) sweep of Kansas Saturday night at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center.
“It was a great road win against a good Kansas team,” said head coach Christy Johnson. “Klein had a nice match for us tonight, which was good to see because she has been frustrated lately. She has looked good in practice the last couple days and it was nice to see it in a match.”
With the win, Iowa State improves to 11-4 overall and 3-2 in Big 12 play. Kansas falls to 8-7 overall and 1-5 in conference action.
The Cyclones out blocked Kansas, 11 to six, and had 60 team digs, including a match-high 14 from Nicole Lorenzen. Kaylee Manns chipped in 10 digs to go along with 42 assists and Laura Cady added 12 digs of her own.
“I thought that we made some phenomenal defensive plays at the end of the match and that really gave us the momentum to close it out,” said Johnson.
The Cyclones went to Boeve early and often in game one, getting five quick kills from the middle blocker to go up 22-21. The Cyclones were able to push their lead to 25-22 following a kill from Lorenzen and a block by Lorenzen and Klein before Kansas got back in it, closing the gap to 29-28. Lauren Cummings blasted a kill to give the Cyclones a 30-28 win and put ISU on top 1-0.
Boeve had six first game kills for ISU, who out hit the Jayhawks .196 to .183 in the game.
Boeve was again dominant for Iowa State in the second game, ripping seven kills and getting four digs as the Cyclones went up 2-0 with a 30-22 win. Iowa State hit just .179 as a team but was helped by five Jayhawk service errors.
After falling behind 5-1 to open the third game and trailing 9-8, ISU scored the next five points to go on top 13-9. After Kansas got within one at 17-16 a solo block by Lorenzen ended the Jayhawks' four point run. Kansas tied the game at 21-21 but Boeve ripped a pair of kills to put ISU up 23-21. The Cyclones went on to win 30-24 and pick up their second straight sweep of Kansas.
The Cyclones return home for a pair of Big 12 matches against nationally ranked teams next week. ISU will host Texas on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. before facing Missouri on Saturday at 4 p.m.
