"Kansas State is a physical team and very experienced," ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. "We had too many turnovers in the first half and too many possessions in a row where went scoreless. Our guys were frustrated by a turnover, or a defensive breakdown. Good players do not let their emotions affect the way they play."
The Wildcats started the game with a smothering man-to-man defense that shut down ISU's offensive productivity. The Cyclones made just 6-of-20 shots (30 percent) from the field and committed 10 turnovers in the opening period, as KSU held a 26-16 halftime advantage. The 16 points scored by ISU was the lowest scoring output in a half since the Cyclones tallied 14 points in the first half against Texas Tech on Feb. 2, 2002.
KSU increased its lead to 37-23 early in the second half until the Cyclones went on a 10-2 run to cut the Wildcat margin to 39-33 with 13:07 left. The run was capped off by a Dodie Dunson trey from way out as the shot clock was expiring. The Wildcats quickly got the lead back up to 12 points (45-33) with 8:54 remaining behind David Hoskins' strong play. Hoskins was tough to stop in the paint, scoring 22 points. ISU got the lead back down to six points (47-41), but a pair of treys from Akeem Wright and Cartier Martin stopped ISU's momentum.
Jiri Hubalek produced a strong effort, tallying his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Mike Taylor finished the game with 21 points, scoring all of his points in the last 8:38 of the game. Taylor, who made two treys, now has 51 on the season to rank 15th on
"Every game in the Big 12 is going to be physical," Hubalek said. "Right now we have to look in the mirror and decide where we want to be. We have to decide where we want to go and decide how much commitment we want to give. We need to look ahead, because there are a lot of games left."
