“Texas A&M presents a lot of problems for most teams and tonight was no different,” said ISU head coach Greg McDermott. “They have a lot of weapons and are the type of team that will present problems for opponents come NCAA Tournament time. I'm not sure that even our best effort would have been enough against this team. They are just a very good ball team.”
The Aggies (18-3, 6-1 Big 12) shot 41.7 percent (25-of-60) and stifled the Cyclone offense with a smothering defense that forced 21 turnovers.
Joseph Jones led four players in double-figures for the Aggies with 21 points, 19 of which came in the first half. Acie Law IV and Antanas Kavaliauskas each added 13 and Josh Carter finished with 10.
Wesley Johnson paced the Cyclones (11-10, 2-5) with 17 points, including 13 in the first half. Johnson equalled a career-high with three 3-pointers.
Mike Taylor also reached double-figures for the Cyclones, recording 13 points, including a 3-pointer for the 17th consecutive game. The streak is the second longest in school history behind Dedric Willoughby (1996-97), who connected on a long ball in 21 straight games.
The Aggies jumped out of the gates firing on all cylinders, opening up a 23-8 lead just eight minutes into the game. Jones keyed the A&M run with 10 early points for the Aggies, who made eight of their first 14 shots, including 3-of-4 from long distance.The teams battled back-and-forth for the remainder of the first period, but Texas A&M extended its lead to 39-23 at the half.
Jones had 19 first half points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Jones outshined Wesley Johnson, who was outstanding with 13 points for the Cyclones.
Texas A&M continued to roll after the break, increasing its lead to as much as 29 in the second half.
The Cyclones were able to outrebound the bigger Aggies, 40-37.
