COLUMBIA, Mo. ? Jordan Bishop broke a scoreless tie in the second minute of overtime to propel Iowa State (8-5-3) past No. 16 Missouri, 1-0, Friday night at Walton Stadium. The marker was Bishop's second consecutive game-winner in as many matches.
The ISU win, together with an Oklahoma overtime loss to Colorado, clinches the Cyclones' berth in the Big 12 Tournament.
“Missouri is a talented team,” said ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “We just kept on going at them and overall, defensively, we were very solid. We told (the team) right before overtime that it was going to take a half-chance or a chance to get a shot off. Jordan Bishop took that chance and she put it away with an exclamation point. Overall, I'm really proud of our team's desire and determination. They left it all on the field.”
Bishop collected the carom of a fifty-fifty ball a few yards directly atop the 18-yard box and fired the shot into the top left corner past Mizzou goalkeeper Tasha Dittamore (5-2-0).
Ann Gleason (8-5-3) made seven saves behind a strong Cyclone defense to shut out the nation's seventh-ranked offensive attack. Gleason's sixth shutout of the year marked the first time the Tigers, who'd been averaging 2.87 goals per game entering tonight's match-up, have been blanked in 2007. Dating back to last season, the Tigers hadn't been shut out in 17 straight matches.
The Tigers made just one save on the night, a clearance by a field player on the goal line to prevent Stephanie Kaphingst's header in the 72nd minute. The Tigers outshot the Cyclones, 20-11, overall, and 7-2, in shots on goal. Mizzou also finished with a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The win is ISU's second over a ranked team this season. Ironically, the other win came against another team ranked No. 16 at the time, Oklahoma State. The Cyclones' record against ranked teams this season is now 2-1-1. They tied then-No. 3 Texas and lost to another team from Texas ranked No. 3 at the time of competition, Texas A&M.
The Cyclones continue Big 12 action on the road as they travel to Kansas (5-9-4, 3-2-3) for a pivotal Sunday afternoon tilt. ISU holds a slim Big 12 points lead, 13-12, over the Jayhawks.
