Malcom Leads Iowa State Past Kansas, 3-0

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State volleyball continued its winning streak against Kansas, sweeping the Jayhawks 3-0 (30-24, 30-25, 30-19), Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum in front of a season-high crowd of 1,383.

Junior Jen Malcom recorded the tenth-best single-game hitting percentage in Cyclone history, hitting .636. Malcom recorded 14 kills with no errors on 22 attempts to go along with a solo block and five block assists. Sophomore setter Kaylee Manns recorded a double-double with 46 assists and 12 digs, and also tallied six kills with no errors. In the last five matches, Manns has 23 kills and no errors. Mary Bisenius and Victoria Henson rounded out the Cyclones in double-figures with 13 and 10 kills, respectively.

“We've been working hard,” Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson. “Overall I thought we played sharp. I'm very happy with our offensive production, we spread the ball around and were able to keep them off balance.”

The Cyclones (11-5, 5-1 Big 12) led most of the first game after taking the lead 7-6, but Kansas (9-7, 2-4) proved resilient, tying the game three more times. ISU pulled away at the end of the game and eventually buried the Jayhawks with a Lauren Cummings kill, to take the game, 30-24. The Cyclones moved to 8-0 on the season after capturing the first game of a match.

Bisenius converted eight of her ten attacks in game two to lead the Cyclones to a 30-25 victory in the game. Despite seven errors to Kansas' three, ISU controlled the entire game and put the Jayhawks in a 2-0 hole on a Bisenius kill.

ISU ran away with the third and final game, 30-19, and finished the Jayhwaks off on senior captain Erin Boeve's 12th kill of the match. With the win, Johnson remained undefeated against Kansas in her tenure at ISU, winning all five matches.

ISU next travels to Norman, Okla., to face the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
