Iowa State Sweeps Colorado, 3-0

AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State used a little trickery while treating its fans to quite the show as the Cyclones used a record-setting performance by Erin Boeve and a career-high 13 digs from Lauren Cummings to pick up a Halloween win over Colorado, 3-0 (30-23, 30-17, 30-20), on Wednesday evening at Hilton Coliseum.

Boeve was all over the place for the Cyclones (14-9, 8-5 Big 12), hammering 14 kills with just one error en route to a .684 hitting percentage, equaling the fifth-best single-match in school history. As impressive as the senior was at the net, she was even more impressive behind the service line, racking up a rally scoring school-record six service aces, all of which came in the third and final game. She also had six block assists and two digs in the effort.

Cummings, who effectively played all the way around for the first time in her career, tied for the match-high with a career-best 13 digs to go along with her 11 kills.

“Lauren has played great defense in practice, so tonight we wanted to see if it would be an option for our team,” said Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson. “She is so competitive and if she is going to get the opportunity to play in other positions, she is going to take advantage of it.”

Victoria Henson also reached double-figures for Iowa State with 10 kills, while Kaylee Manns had 39 assists in guiding the Cyclones' offensive attack to a .358 hitting percentage. Manns and freshman Ashley Mass reached double-figure digs with 10 and 13, respectively, with Manns chipping in a career-high seven block assists.

Colorado (5-17, 0-14) got 11 kills from Alex Buth and 10 from Emilee Sisco as the Buffaloes remained winless in Big 12 play.

Iowa State took game one 30-23 despite trailing midway through the game. After a service error by Henson made it 20-18 Colorado, ISU scored 10 of the next 11 points to grab control of the game and cruise to a 1-0 lead.

After hitting an impressive .318 in the first game, the Cyclones kept the pressure on the Buffaloes, hitting .375 in game to on their way to a 30-17 win and 2-0 lead at the intermission.

The Cyclones left little doubt in game three, riding seven team service aces, six of which came from Boeve, to the 30-20 win. Iowa State took a quick 15-9 lead in the game and hit .400 to earn the sweep.

“I felt like we relaxed and set the tone early in each game and didn't have to chase them,” said Johnson. “We have been working on a faster tempo and having Boeve in the middle helped create that. I thought we did a great job tonight.”
