AMES, Iowa - Former Iowa State volleyball player Vicki (Seliger) Swenson and her family will be featured on ABC's popular TV show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. Swenson, who was a member of the Cyclone volleyball squad from 1988-92 and is a head coach at Hopkins (Minn.) High School, and her family were selected from a group of finalists in August. The bulldozing of their Minnetonka, Minn., home began on August 23.
Swenson's house, which was suitable for a family of four or five, became a bit small when the family increased to nine following the death of her sister, Teri Lee, on Sept. 22, 2006. Lee and her boyfriend Tim Hawkinson were murdered by her abusive ex-boyfriend. The Swenson family took in Lee's four children, making the old house a tight fit for the bigger family.
Erik and Vicki Swenson are both teachers at Hopkins and their students made a videotape nominating the family for a new home.
The new house, which was built by TJB Homes and volunteer carpenters and subcontractors, has 5,600 square feet and has seven bedrooms and five bathrooms, which is more than twice the space they previously had.
While the home was being built, the family spent several days in Disneyland, courtesy of the show.
