AMES, Iowa?Jared Josten recorded 20 points to pace Northern Iowa to a 61-48 victory over Iowa State Tuesday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones fall to 2-3 on the season and the Panthers improve to 5-1.
"I need to congratulate UNI," ISU head coach McDermott said. "They came in with a plan similar to what we anticipated. We got a couple of guys in foul trouble, and we weren't able to sustain the defense that we came out with at the start."
Iowa State jumped out to an early 10-4 lead behind a pair of treys from Wesley Johnson. Johnson was playing in his first game this season after missing ISU's first four games with a bone bruise in his foot. UNI answered with 14 consecutive points to take an 18-10 lead with 9:34 remaining in the opening period. Two quick fouls on Craig Brackins sent ISU's leading scorer to the bench with 15 minutes left in the first half.
Rahshon Clark finally ended a Cyclone scoring drought that lasted 6:44 with a pull-up jumper at the 9:02 mark of the opening period. The Cyclones eventually cut the lead to one point (20-19) on a Diante Garrett floater with 6:44 remaining, but UNI once again responded with six consecutive points to forge ahead 26-19. UNI ended the half with a 31-26 lead. The Cyclones again struggled on the glass, getting outrebounded 20-14 in the first period.
The Cyclones came out hot after the break, as Jiri Hubalek scored six of ISU's 12 consecutive points to take a 38-31 advantage with 13:22 left in the game. UNI's Josten ended the run with a jumper, as the Panthers missed their first seven shots of the second half. The Cyclones then went cold from the floor as the Panthers inched closer at 39-38 after a Josten conventional 3-point play with 8:46 left in the game. Hubalek's put-back then ended a five minute field goal drought for the Cyclones to push ISU out in front 41-38.
Brown canned a trey from the corner to give UNI a 46-43 lead with 5:15 left. UNI then took a 53-45 lead when Josten banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the key and made a pair of free-throws. UNI coasted the rest of the way as ISU again went cold from the field.
Wesley Johnson scored 18 points in his season debut to lead the Cyclones, going 4-of-8 from 3-point range. Hubalek added 10 points and seven rebounds.
ISU travels to Oregon State on Friday to play in the inaugural Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series.
